Question about a few Nikon Nikkor lens

Sorry if there's already a thread with the same questions I have, the search feature here is down, as you all probably know.

I was wondering if anyone could tell me about the Nikkor 18-70mm DX ED lens. I have a Nikon D70 and I'm interested in getting a new lens soon. I heard this particular lens could be used for wide-angle shots (pretty much what I would want it for).
Or maybe someone could suggest a wide-angle lens for the D70 that they think is really nice?

If I don't get a wide-angle, I'm most likely going to pick up a macro lens. I was looking into the Nikon 105mm f2.8D AF Micro-Nikkor Macro Lens but it's quite up there in price. Is there anything anyone can tell me about that lens, or perhaps suggest a different macro lens?

Any help is really appriciated. And if there's already threads about these topics, could someone just give me a link?

I got my 18-70 with the body (why did not you get one, too? it cost me around $100, I think, which is a steal). Nice sharp lens, fast and quiet AF. Great for wide-angle shots. For macro I use my old 28-105 f3.5-4.5 (it has a switch). Nice, sharp, well built lens, not very expensive - probably around $300 nowadays. Great for portraits, too.

My parents got the camera for me as a Christmas gift and it didn't come with a lens. I would've loved to have gotten it for only $100, though.
But the wide-angle shots are really nice, huh?
I had wanted a macro primarily, but this 18-70 is more in my budget and I would love to have a nice wide-angle lens.
Would you recommend buying it regardless of the extra cost for not getting it with the camera? I mean, would you think it's worth it?

I am not an expert, but I think even for $300 18-70mm is a good buy. I mean, Nikon 17-35 f2.8 is definitely a better lens, but it is $1700...

Hahaha wow $1700, yes, that's rather high, isn't it?

Well, I also got my 18-70 DX ED with the body. I have to say that it's a really good lens, sharp, no CA sofar and above all silent. If you compare it to the Sigma 70-300 APO Macro II, man, it's like there a little guys inside handling big gearweels, screaming their pain. The drawback would be the apperture at 70mm : F5.6, but well, it's enough in most situations.
Anyway, too bad you didn't get it with the body, you would have saved a lot of bucks. Especially here in France, this lens costs 400 eur (about $489). Don't know where you're from but well.

Haha, yeah, having a noisy lens probably gets annoying really fast.

I'm over in the US, and while the lens is only around $300 dollars here, it would've been great to get it with the camera. Nothing I can do about now, though, I suppose. Shame.

I'm glad to hear that two people have said it's a nice lens, though. So far it looks like I'm leaning towards this lens as my next purchase.

The Nikkor 18-70mm lens is a *fabulous* lens. Highly recommended.

I'm another fan of the 18-70, one tip though - always use the hood, it can be a little sensitive to rogue light (can make your pics soft)

Sorry, my mistake, I still had the Sigma in mind which is F5.6 at 300mm
The 18-70 is indeed F4.5 at 70mm which is quite good but from time to time not enough.
Anyway, go for it, it's a very good lens !

For Macro the 105mm Nikor is legendary for alot less money the Tamron SP90 gets awfully good reviews it is worth looking into for the cost difference.

another vote for the 18-70, a marvelous lens.
Well worth it.
The only downside is the high aperature in low light, but thats why I got my 50mm f1.8

Love my 24-85 f2.8 with macro. Not as wide as I would like but that's fine for now.
Wouldn't give it up for 18-70.

My wide lens will be 12-24 f4. Maybe 10.5 someday.
