Would you guys consider a drive in movie theatre obsolete?

(I don't know of any currently running drive in theatre's?!? do you? :)

I ask because after browsing the submissions I've noticed alot of entries in this challenge where things are old and run-down..but not exactly obsolete..I hope something like that wouldn't fall into that category!!

*edited* x2 to make this post P.C. :P

umm ... not obsolete in your definition. My family just went to one this past weekend. (If your comment identifies your entry, you should edit it out!)

This site has a pretty current and extensive list of drive-ins across the country, with several in Texas. I remember seeing a lot of movies at the drive-in when I was a kid...too bad my children haven't gotten to experience it for themselves. I think I might have to take them to one on the list just so they can say they've been to one! :o)

There's a very busy and popular drive-in right down the street from me.

ahhh well I stand corrected!

didn't know drive in theaters still operated anywhere (thanks for the site link btw). I think that's pretty cool that people still want to see movies at those..

I guess it's not as obsolete as I had though =(

Why are we talking about specific challenge entries?

The challenge description says: "Take a picture of something that has outlived its usefulness. It could be old technology, broken, discarded, outgrown, forgotten - anything. Exception: people (alive or dead) are not to be the main subject."

The Oxford english dictionary says: "No longer used or practised; outmoded, out of date"

I think alot of people in this challenge are going to vote "obsolete" by the literal definition of the word, but I think the description actually leaves alot of room for more interpretation. (I have a whole rant on that, but I'll save it for another post :) Given the description, I would definatly say that an old forgotten drive-in would fit the challenge.

That IS a cool link! Thanks. Took the kids to a drive-in last summer on vacation and they loved it. Was a cool blast from the past for us parents too. I like the way the linked site shows the closed/inactive drive-ins as well...the ones from my past have fizzled out. Fun to find out thou.

If one submits an image of a drive-in theater that's abandoned and rundown, it qualifies in my book...would be hard to find anything that we don't use some version of it anymore to consider it obsolete

reread the rules: Take a picture of something that has outlived its usefulness. It could be old technology, broken, discarded, outgrown, forgotten - anything. This doesn't mean everything in that category (ie drive-ins) are not used anymore!

Not obsolete around here, they just changed their career. There's a few still around the LA area, but the ones I've seen are used primarily for swap meets on the weekends.

My first comment indicated that my image did not fit the challenge. It amazes me that many people do not read the entire description.

Take a picture of something that has outlived its usefulness. It could be.........

The statement "It could be" does not me it has to be!
Its all in fun and games but I wish some people can look outside the box or look alittle longer to see what the photographer had in mind.

It looks like some people believe Obsolete just means old. The computor they are using is obsolete!

I have cheese here for my wine. Where's my beer? Oh!!! Its only 7am. I need to wait a hr or two. LOL

I know! Thank you for reminding me..I'm new to DPchallenge but feel I understand the rules. I have edited my first post 2x now, hopefully it meets the standards! I'm not referring to anything specific!!! :D

I would have to agree with bfox2. An old abandoned drive-in theatre would fit the bill of 'obsolete'. I had an idea for a photo involving an old rusted out boat with weeds growing all around it, but I wasn't able to photograph it due to weather constraints and other outside forces leading me to not enter in this particular contest. I think this challenge can consist of things which are not being used anymore, but other items exactly like it may still be in use, just not the item photographed.

It could be black or white. That does mean it is red! Some entrants take the last word in the description -anything- and gave it more emphasis than the title - obsolete. I am voting based on the 'spirit' of the challenge as i understand it. TO me obsolete means it has been replaced by something newer/better/faster.

As for what is obsolete...the model T car, a steam locomotive, a horse and buggy would certainly qualiify..but when i was at Greenfield Village last week all three were in use, making money and working 70+ hours a week. So the fact that it is in use or not does not mean it is obsolete or not so.

As to your computer reference...what is obsolete? What is no longer used, or useful perhaps? So if i am using my computer, then it is not obsolete, but just old.

I figured this challenge, like many others before it, would suffer from interpretation woes. About 4 hours into it, and it has started... :)

We also have one in town that we go to many weekends (this last week they even showed Batman and Star Wars back to back) but if it is a run-down and is understandable not used then it has outlived its usefulness in that area and I think it would fit the challenge.

Just about everything is still used somewhere, maybe not for its original purpose or in its original form but still used.

It would be very difficult to say something is obsolete just cause you still use it.

I like what you have to say here and your definition of what obsolete is..something that has replaced it in a signifigant sense (ie, not just a new computer model, that would make the previous model old..but a whole new system, like CD's replacing tapes, or drive-ins being replaced with new indoors theatres, etc.)

I think I will stick with that in mind when browsing, voting, commenting! :)

I pulled up a web site that displayed obsolete computors. All work, however because it works does not mean it is not considered obsolete. If you had a working Vic 20, it would be considered obsolete in addition to old technology. My perception. The challenge is very broad in description.

If I want to drive a few miles, there are no less than three operating drive-in theaters I could go to.

we have one here to but i guess it depends, i dont use it and i dont know anyone in particular that uses it so therefore i would say they were almost obsolete in my town..but there are alot of entries that were photographed to be obsolete but mny people still use them. so unless its something that isnt in existance anymore, i would say that most of the entries would have to fit the challenge. records, tapes, 8-tracks, bata, etc are all obsolete but they can and are still used. so i'm just voting on the photo itself unless its obviously not obsolete!
