Take a picture of something that has outlived its usefulness. It could be old technology, broken, discarded, outgrown, forgotten - anything. Exception: people (alive or dead) are not to be the main subject.
Please read and apply some thought to the words before you vote.
"Anything" sums it up pretty good. Why would it be tough to vote on "anything"?

While yes, technically, all these old/broken things do meet the challenge as the description is written, we are not in the court of law where you can bring a lawyer to explain how you really did meet the challenge as written.
After all, I could have taken a photo of my 22-55mm lens that I no longer use and claim that it is obsolete:Canon had probably discontinued it and I no longer use it, although it is in a perfect working and cosmetic condition. Or, I could take a picture of the shiny Turbo Tax CD from year 2004 and be meeting the challenge even more.

We are in the DPC zone, and it does not matter what you thought you could swing by either posting to forums or writing a sentence for a title, you are going down if your photo is not obsolete in the most common meaning of the word.

This is not "creative out of the box" thinking, it is rather shoot something for the challenge and "shove it in the box somehow" thinking and there is a difference.

Of course, if you're fine with entering just anything and keeping quiet about it, that's fine. But if you decided to shove something in because you cleverly figured out the way to fit it in, and at the same time you whine in the forums about voters 'not reading the description', understand that you are doomed. Your photo will score a mediocre middle to lower half, depending on how technically and compositonally pleasing to the eye it is.

I was merely pointing out that anything could fit the challenge. And I'm getting tired of a new thread every challenge stating how "bad" the pictures are or how off topic they are.
I don't complain about my votes because I think about my entry before I submit. I'm a big girl and it's not painful to accept responsibility for my own actions.

i thought mine was different.. not a 10, but also not a 4.3.

Wanted to post my favorite comment so far, made me laugh.

Can`t you see all the noise in the photo??

First thing that came to mind was..."can't you see that this type of noise is not normally from a camera and was probably added in a creative form?"

Hope I didn't give away too much as to which picture is mine.

What'd you guys think?

I think you might want to check your monitor, cause mine isn't overexposed either.

I agree! I'm disappointed with myself for participating in another negative thread. I just wonder what would happen if all of this energy was directed at placing constructive comments on the entries instead of griping about the challenges?

although quite possible I'm sure its not easy to find something obsolete that ISN'T old and probably broken.

Turns out I already had a good out-take in my portfolio ... this still plays:

greatandsmall WTG!!! A voice of reason....the naysayers need to take a look at theirselves and try to be positive!

I think negative threads like this need to be banned..

What bothers me is the Does not fit challenge comment. Just about anything fits. If it is broken, not used or old technology should fit.
Doesnt matter if it is biological or man made.
Very broad description. I do not mind a low score due to artistic or image quality. I do mind DNFC comments.

Wheres the BEER???

Beer is not obsolete.

Well, I personally, being new to photography, thought up the best idea I could and tried to get the best shot out of it possible. Sorry I didn't meet all of your high standards of photography for this challenge but I'm trying to become a better photographer and this site and these challenges are helping. Regardless of how crappy my entry is or will be in future challenges...

Hi everyone,

I am very new to this group and Obsolete was my first submission.

I feel pretty bad about the fact that my scores are so low but I am really bothered that there are no comments. How do you learn if no one comments?????

Geeshhhh, does it go like this alot?

With a large number of entries quite a few voters make 2 or 3 passes through the entries to vote and come back later to comment. No comments in the first few days is normal. Also, those scoring around 4 or 5 tend to get fewer comments.
06/29/2005 12:50:29 PM · #42
Take heart. I've submitted a few mediocre images and longed for more comments. The people who do take the time to give constructive criticism really make up for the naysayers. Just be patient and make sure you are here to learn, not just get praise. Thick skin is good:)

Unfortunately, photos which are really bad and ones which are really good garner the most comments, as those are the easiest to write, and many people are leery of writing highly critical comments because of previously-received negative responses. Commenting also goes down when there are really large challenges, as they devote more of their time to finishing that.

Scores in the 4's are not at all unusual for new (or old) members -- it can take a while to see what kinds of pictures appeal to the voters. You also need to make a fundamental decision about whether your goal is to produce a high-scoring photo, or one which best represents your vision of the challenge, regardless of how well-liked it will be by this community. There are many members of both camps here ...

Thanks guys, I feel better. I really don't mind getting a low score but I would like to know why.

It is sinking like a stone, down to 3.87...

All in all, I think the ribbon certainly belongs to the person who came up with the title. It seems to be that consensus is the only obsolete thing in the dpchallenge arena at present.

Never have I seen such division by so many in such a little time.

Rather than ignore the DNFC, vote them a 1. That then takes some 10% off your plate. Then sit down and really evalute the rest. After all the judge rules.

If we cannot take a hammering then we should perhaps join a local club for ant gazing and sell our cameras.

Lets take the good and the bad, the vote itself is a harsh comment, take it seriously.

I do.

I got a "a little far off of the theme" I thought on the lines of out lived its usefulness! My gosh people, take time to look at the quality of the pictures and not whether you might think it fits the challenge!! ( my first real rant!!)

What a great idea! Is there an ant gazing club in my area?

Absolutely! And if anyone is interested, I'll be glad to trade you a whole bunch of ants for a good DSLR!

I agree that most of the entries I viewed had no real relation with the word 'obsolete'. Even those that did were often like snapshots than decent photographs. I gree about with the over-exposed comment too. I saw far more awful photos in this challenge than any other.

How many cases of alcohol will you take for a good DSLR?
