I know this is footage for TV, but the principle remains.
Question: You gent sent (and paid) to shoot some footage of someone at an event. That someone instructs you to stop, and threatens phisical violence. What do you do? Back off a distance and fix a longer lens ? Go home ? Get shoved around and milk the situation ? What ?

Try and avoid getting beaten up, then get on with your job.

For my money, I'd keep shooting. I would avoid milking the situation were I Rodriguez. But that depends on the pitcher. If he doesn't give sort of apology to this photographer for doing his job, then I would be looking to make him pay anyway I could. In short, I'd keep shooting personally.
Unless he has a gun. |

Exactly...your job is to document without getting involved. If you're shoving your camera in someone's face then you're getting too involved in the situation. However, if Mr. big-shot-american-baseball-player walks up to you and shoves you around, keep on rolling! ...Be careful, but keep on rolling! You've got a job to do and Mr. Baseball isn't the one paying you.

personaly, I would have done the same thing. I also would be on all the local news with my bandages and would have my lawyers all over this cat. There is something in me that just gets enraged when famous people get away with stuff like this. I would go back and stand in the same spot and film him again |

Keep shooting. After he knocks your camera down and shoves you smile, cause you know pretty soon you'll be driving his car :)

Call your boss and ask them to advise. If you are the camera man you don't get paid enough to have to worry about making that decision.

That's assault and battery (maybe with a battery!). It's also a violation of the player's contract.
Perhaps fortunately for all concerned, Mr. Rogers is out of action for a while after breaking his hand punching out a water cooler ... |

Clearly this particular celebrity has issues he needs to work out and in any case violence should not be condoned. Generally speaking, I think there is more that one side to the celebrity/photographer confrontation story. There are instances where photographer simply get out of hand and cause inconvenience even harm to their subjects. I dont think anyone needs to reminded of what the late Princess Di went through. On the other hand those celebrities that display excessive hostility to the media are only setting themselves up for more discomfort. |

In this case the camerapersons were properly credentialed and had every right to be where they were and doing what they were doing. These are professional photojournalists covering public figures at work, not paparazzi pursuing celebrities in the course of conducting their private lives. There's really little comparison between the two situations.
