Just wondering what other people think about this. While searching for objects that fit the circle challenge I discovered many objects that were round, but that I didn't think met the challenge requirement. To me circle implies that there is an outside edge with the center either being empty or a different color...
Kinda hard to describe, but personally I think that round objects like a baloon or baseball, ect. do not fit this challenge and thus I will be voting them down.
Any other people feel this way or am I just being anal? |

Yes, you are.
PS: Thankfully my entry is not a sphere.

I think you are being anal..sorry your words..
I don't see the value in challenges being argued on semantics or subjective interpretation of the rules..I am only interested in ATTEMPTS to meet the challenge, and photography. And yes 500 is a scary #. |

Doesn't really matter all that much anyway since I am going to ribbon with my entry! :p |

Good for you! I like the fact that you're not locked into a FINAL decision. |

Generally, if I can see any connection to the theme, I give the picture the benefit of the doubt. My thinking may not be up to encompassing the whole of the challenge, as it were.
My personal rule is that if I simply cannot in any way, shape, or form equate the picture with the challenge, then I will mentally grade the picture as if it fit the challenge and then subtract one point from that score.
It may not be the best way to handle the situation, but it gives me a way to handle the situation. Thus I need not freeze up and attempt to reinvent the wheel every time this problem arises.

Regardless of your "vision" of a circle, a basketball certainly fits the description. I don't see how the inside being empty makes it any more a circle. |

I was thinking along the lines of this......
A sphere is 3 dimensional, while a circle is 1 dimensional. If the subject at least has the appearance of being one dimensional then it is a circle. At least IMO anyways. *shrug* |

A circle is different from a sphere. My 2 cents :) |

We could go around in circles on this one.........hehehehehe ... but then again, it could be that we would be going round and round and....

If we could only photograph it |

In a photograph, as with any one-dimensional art, all spheres are circles anyway ;) |

OK... so I actually thought of a few examples that would discredit my origianl thought of round vs circular (or whether there was a difference).
I was wrong... I admit it. Looks like I better not think out loud any more. :\ |

You aren't defining a circle - you are defining a ring.
I am VERY glad I decided to skip this one.... |

Technically speaking, a circle is the set of points that are all equidistant from some other point (the center). A sphere is the set of points that are all equidistant from the center point in 3d. So... by this definition, the ring is actually a circle, if the thickness were infinitely small.
Obviously, this definition leaves very little artistic room.. and I hope people will rather go with "circular" as their definition of the challenge, rather than just... "circle" which is a bit stringent. |

And so it begins.
