Me, too. I'm very interested in this whole idea. Thanks for getting it rolling, David! Practically all of the special areas discussed so far appeal to me, especially ones that focus on learning to first internalize the "rules" (light, technique, etc.) before I learn to break them.

I'm really looking forward to seeing how this all turns out!

Oh please, let me play too! I've so much to learn! I would love to especially learn more about:

Photoshop
Candids
Lighting
Cityscapes
Landscapes

(edited to add interest areas)

I'm up for learning, and willing to tag along in a local group here as time permits.
Not sure I have a whole heck of a lot to contribute though.

I need all the help I can get!! I think I would be interested in the Photoshop type. I take pictures of a little bit of everything...so there is no niche or favorite that I have discovered yet. Definiitely anything with lighting, exposure, etc would be a great help!

I'd be interested in Landscapes, more paticularly sunrises & sunsets.

OK, I'm liking the "focus group" concept.

I'm willing to mentor in Photoshop. I'm nearing my Adobe Certified Expert exam and might as well try to put some of that useless knowledge to work ;-)

With regard to the groups, this is getting big, fast. I've got over 30 people so far. I'm going to post a list, shortly.

For topics, I have (thus far):

- Post-Processing/Photoshop
- Theory/Basics
- Breaking the Rules
- Landscape/Scenic
- Underwater
- Architecture
- Natural Light
- Candid
- Portrait
- Studio
- Action

I would also be interested. It's hard to pinpoint a focus group, though, since I like to do a bit of everything. I guess for me it would be the basics group - that should apply to all types of subjects and styles.

Studio isn't necessarily for portrait work so I think it's fine as a separate group. Also, portaits don't necessarily have to be done in the studio.

Breaking the rules I feel is separate from the basics. You could very easily go off on a tangent in the basics group with this.

Just my 2 cents.

Great list... and I think Portrait and Studio should be two separate things because they are two separate animals entirely, but that's just MY opinion. ;)

As an aside, I might not know a heck of a lot, but I'd be willing to help corral a group in the Candid area... that's my favorite thing to do and I seem to be drawn that direction no matter what I do. Having kids does that to a person, I think! ;)

I like this too. Put me down in whatever capacity you think appropriate.

One more thing I thought of though has not been mentioned by anyone as an interest ....

Action photography
07/09/2005 07:03:00 PM · #63
deapee, do you have a particular subject you'd like to mentor in?
07/09/2005 07:08:44 PM · #64
Can we make sure that these groups are capped at a certain enrollement limit... otherwise there would really be no difference between that and just posting on a forum.

Based on his portfolio... I would say definitely as a mentor.

I would like to do this in any capacity where you think I might fit. Great idea!

Sure, if you think I can help that way. I suspect the mentors will learn as much as the rest!

I would like to join as well. I can use a mentor.

OK, now for the really tough question:

How shall we separate this out a little bit? Do you think DPC would be willing to create some additional forum topics for the groups? Maybe a Mentorship group with the topics as subgroups? If it's just done in the "out and about" section, as previously mentioned by GeneralE, it may get a little cluttered.

Makes sense to me to set up a new forum area for this.

For now, at least until there have been a few successful groups, a single thread in the 'out and about' forum for each group is not going to overburden anything. No sense creating new forums until the concept has proven itself.

While your adding topics, I would be interested in Exposure techniques -- particularly as related to the Zone System.

I'm new enough not to know how to contact the site admins. Anyone want to tackle this?

Thinking outside the box, aint we? ;-)

Great ideas always come from an insight, a moment of thinking, then the recognising of the potential and the elevation by added thoughts..

Robt, may you find a little space in your group, please reserve it for me.

This is really great idea, I especially like the part about orienting the groups according to preferred style of shooting. That said... I wanna be in Bear's group.... :) I just went looking through his portfolio and his work reminds me a lot of my own... except better... MUCH better.
