I'm heading off to Tokyo for a week and Bangkok for the weekend at the end of the month. I'd love to hear some ideas of places to go and sites to see. Also, any DPCers out there want to meet up? I'm taking my brand new EF-S 10-22 - can't wait to see what kind of shots I get with it. Any ideas?

Once you get to Bangkok, immediately get on a train or plane and head up to Chiang Mai (less than an hour in the air). no smog, less traffic, amazing people and sights...you can't be disappointed.

I'll be on vacation then, too, so I might be available to meet up in Tokyo, or you could come up to visit Nikko.

In Tokyo, the Sensoji temple and Meiji jingu temple are interesting to see, but both can be a bit crowded.
And if you're interested in parks, there are two nice and quiet ones near the Komagome subway station. I don't remember the names of the two parks, but they're only a few minutes away if you follow the road that goes outside the station. One park is to the left, the other is to the right.

For some busy city life I can recommend Shinjuku (great camera stores there) and Shibuya (especially during the weekends). For a free view of Tokyo from above, visit the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building. One of the top floors is open for visitors.

And Roppongi hills can be great for some neon filled night shots.

I have a bunch of (mostly overexposed) snaps taken in Tokyo in may at //www.mikael-andersson.com/

pedro is right.. just get the hell out of Bangkok, get out. Last time I was there looking at some fruit a guy grabbed my camera and in the struggle to prevent him, many people around us not on willing to help, I got mugged. Watch out and be very alert. Almost everyone, from taxi driver to socalled government approved tour guides have one thing in mind ie to take you for a ride. And please do not say my case was isolated, I have been there many times and many people I know too. Bankok is just amazing for photgraphy, just amazing, and cheap too. But at a risk to yourself and your posessions.

I spent a week in Japan around Christmas last year. You can get to them through my website. If you ever get home sick Roppongi caters pretty well to the Western culture. Otherwise you can wander just about anywhere and experience something new.

I suggest going to Electric City. Shinjuku. It's about 10 square blocks of just pure electronic heaven :) I stayed at Shio-Dome before at the Tokyo Park hotel. Very nice and very boutique-like. Go to Tokyo Tower if you can as well as the Tokyo Dome where the Yomiuri Giants play. Try to go to Omotesando by Shibuya where fashion reigns :) Asakusa is a great area as well. Phillipe Starck's Asahi building is there as well as Tokyo's largest temple. Shinjuku is a great area as well. If you can drop by Tokyu Hands, go there. It's a great place to find knick knacks!
