Still Saturday here - whew!
I gave this one a couple different tries. One to keep my daughter happy so that she'd cooperate giving me 20 seconds so I could do the one I wanted to try. This one was Grace's Choice from the site. While I like the way it turned out I'm not happy with the shadows around her eyes. We looked for another place for her to lie down on the ground but there was goose poop everywhere so we went with what we had.
This shot was the one I wanted to try. It's very different from anything I've done before. Location was a bit of a challenge, either windows didn't have a big enough ledge to sit on or there wasn't enough bright light coming from behind her. After much hunting for a location and some dodging and burning I came up with this.
and While I'm not 100% happy with the results I love this look so I'll keep trying. As you can see from the look on her face in the first shot I didn't get the buy in I'd hoped for. |

I'm still here, but have been really busy this past week! I may have to skip that last assignment or get to it a little later. |

Ok, anyone that's not posted yet can have an extension. This will allow Sher and I to get some things worked out, and will also allow Jenesis, rgo, irish, and smilebig to do some reshoots, following the advice given them (if they wish). Good work debi on your reworks, and you can also reshoot that portrait for composition if you're up to it, I'd love to see the result.
So, a few days more folks. I know we're going a little slowly here, but I think some people need us to be going slow, and if anyone is feeling antsy, feel free to shoot more in a style of your choosing for practice. If you post it for comments here, be sure to add a link to the inspiration photo, your settings, and any information you'd like to convey that you think would help.
Thanks everyone for your patience and continued participation.

yeah, I gotta apologize, too. We shot 3 weddings in the last 2 weeks and all my time lately has gone to editing images and building albums. Hopefully I'll get back in the swing of things before too long.
PS - Debi, great shot in the window. Love that one.

If you read the original assignment, we stressed that your models did not need to be the same age or gender.. adult models are welcomed and encouraged! We just ask that the general, overall *style* be attempted is all.

OK. I took some time off from editing wedding photos yesterday afternoon and looked through jinky art. Pretty impressive work. The elements of those photos that stood out to me were (1) the shallow depth of field in most of them, (2) the eyes of the subject were visible which can be a PITA when dealing with children 'cause they tend to look down while engaged in other activities and (3) the inclusion of full-body shots that, even with the DoF, create an atmosphere. Given those elements, I went outside with my wife & daughter and got the following:
I realize its not lovely a setting as many of the jinky art shots but I tried to mimic the parts that got my attention.
EDIT: Based on some of Glen's comments I did some more work on the image and here's the change. Little more contrast, tried to brighten the image a little and added some sharpness. I felt like I was walking a fine line on the sharpness issue since too much brings attention to her wet hair (which I felt took attention from her eyes too much).
Thanks for the comments,
Kev

Well, here's my Jinky Art attempt. I didn't have any specific photo chosen, but was going after the lighting style. Unfortunately, this was kind of an impromptu shot, so I didn't get things set up. The background isn't what I would have *chosen*.. but I don't think it's horrible either.
Anyway, It's much easier knowing and *saying* what is good and what to improve.. so much different when you actually try to do it ;)

Hello All....
I'm back but I'm really playing catch-up. I am currently reading through the thread and hope to comment on as many images as possible. I will hopefully be able to post by the end of today...
Great images coming out of this!

Okay, here's my attempt at something that was inspired by this Jinky set up:
Jinky inspiration photo
As a web file, it seems a little softer than it appears in photoshop. Oh well. It's not an attempt at an exact replica, just trying to capture a somewhat similar style.
Mine is not as bright, due to weather and location. I'd like to try something similar with a little brighter look - more similar to the Jinky. Would love some comments!

Hi Judy
You know it's funny my daughter picked out that same set of photos as the ones she liked but it never registered with me that one of the photos in that set was BW until I saw your attempt. Does that mean I'm more drawn to the colored and vibrant photos? |

I studied the Jinky shot for quite awhile, trying to figure out what it was that appealed to me. My version is, really, not that close the Jinky's...but it's a start. I figured I wasn't drawn to the individual photos as much as I was to the trio presentation of complimentary pics. So, that's kind of what I was going for. |

We took some family time and went out on an expedition today. We drove to a town we'd only been through once, played on a playground, dressed up for about 20 minutes worth of shots and had a pretty good day all-in-all.
These aren't based on any particular jinky art shots but I was inspired by the overall ethos of their blog images to produce these two composites.
Composite - 3 States
Composite II - Walking
I used one technique for all the images but I'm quite sure several of them (or some of the others we took today) would respond well to different treatments. I decided to use the open-mouthed image in the center as it showed more of the personality her mother and I are used to; not that its terribly attractive.

I like the second one the best and it's a great use of the desat. What size did you use for the background and the photos? |

Lately when I try to make composites I try to figure out which dimension I want all the images to share (height if I'm planning to put them horizontal or width if I'm going to put them vertical). In this case I made all the images 4" high and allowed for a 1" border on all sides. The images all are 800 pixels tall (4 inches x 200 pixels per inch) but the width varies. When I create the image into which I plan to paste the copied crops of the original images I set it 400 pixels (200 on top and 200 on bottom) larger than the 800 pixels that each image has for its height - 1200 pixels (that gives you the 1" border on top and bottom). I then add the width of all the images together, add 200 pixels for each image (as a border) and then add one more edge of 200 pixels for the border on the right side. In this example it was something like 629 pixels + 539 pixels + 637 pixels for the images = 1805 pixels wide. Each photo needed 200 pixels so 200 x 3 images = 600 pixels. That takes care of everything except the righthand border so you add in 1 final edge of 200 pixels giving you 800 pixels of borders. So now we add our 1805 pixels that the 3 images take up plus the 800 pixels that make our borders and we get 2605 pixels wide x the 1200 pixels high. The fun part is making the images actually fit correctly using the ruler and my eyesight. :)
Hope this helps.

Arrrggggg Kevin! That's a LOT of math. There's was a darn good reason I hung at in the art classes in school ;-)
Let say you wanted to do something like this for a client -- is doing it this way going to fit into a standard size print? I've always worked backwards. Take a standard size like an 8x12 and adjust the photos accordingly. But this doesn't always gaurnteed it will be centered when it's printed. |
