Finally, I can join in! Laurie: my foot is on the mend, hubby is re-couping from surgery (big baby!) and daughter moves to college next Wednesday.......hopefully, things will slow down.
Anyhoo, here is what I have thus far for the scavenger hunt:
Carlos the waiter
the hostesses
Manuel bartender (shot 1...he was showing off!)
Manuel #2
More when I can! This is so much fun!

Great shots Cheryl! Everyone looks like they are having fun. Here is a question for everyone that came to mind while looking at Carlos the waiter. How does one get rid of the flash shadow on the wall in the background? |

I'm so excited to see all the new pics!! I think it's so wonderful that you guys are actually getting out there and doing it!
bvoi - the shadow on the shot of the waiter can be reduced/eliminated by (a) not using flash, (b) using a diffuser or some other way to soften the light, or (c) bounce the flash off of the ceiling using an omnibounce or some other similar device. Distance might also be a factor; the further the subject is from the background, the longer the shadow will be behind him if the flash is directly aimed at him.
I'm going to post a new assignment today, but please continue this one if you want...it's really fun and helps to get you into the habit of approaching people. :)

OK... Time for Assignment #4!
This week we're going to look at color vs. black and white for candid photographs. Why is color sometimes not the best choice? Why is black and white sometimes not the best choice? What is going to make the most difference between the two?
IMHO, I feel that there are certain images where the color gets in the way. When you strip away the color and leave a pallette of blacks, whites, and greys, you remove the distractions and allow the raw emotion of an image to show through. Not all images have that power, but there are some that deserve it. What I'd like you to focus on this week is discerning between the two.
I'm going to list some black and white galleries here and let you take a look at what I've found. Peruse them and really study the emotion you get from viewing the photos. Do you think you'd feel the same way if the image were in color? Maybe you can jot down a couple of examples that you find most compelling. I found some interesting information at the site //www.photogs.com/bwworld/backtobw.html if you'd like to read that as well.
//www.paulpolitis.com/gallery/people.html
//www.ollecarlsson.se/
//www.pixiport.com/blackandwhite.html
//www.urbansketches.com/ (this is a site that links you to many photogs' work...worth the tour if you take the time to look)
//www.digitaljournalist.org/issue9904/field01.htm (have tissues ready!)
//www.accessv.com/~glass/photo/home.htm
There are zillions more but I came across these this week and found myself mesmerized by the telling emotive qualities of black and white.
See what you think, and then come back together in the thread with a few shots of your own. Take three or four candid pictures, and post the color version and the black and white version. Tell us why you like one or the other better, and we can discuss them. I think this will be a great assignment and will give you some things to work with in your digital tool kit that you might not have considered previously. Speaking of which, there are some great black and white conversion actions you can find for Photoshop at //www.atncentral.com . I like the Duotone Dreams package myself, but there are many out there that you can consider. You might already have your own conversion mix made up and could share that with the group. Remember, when I say black and white, I'm also including variations of it, like sepia or duotones of other shades that might work best in a particular instance. Don't be afraid to experiment!
Anyway, have fun and happy shooting this week! :)

Just read the photojournalist site. Check out his war stories after you look at the photo essay. The guy is pretty funny. A good way to lighten up afterwards. |

Lauriel, I beleive I need to bow out for now, I have not been able to get out and work on any of the assignments. I have been working on my website. looking into buying equipment and cleaning out my basement to try to start a studio, so I have been home too much to get out and do the leg work. I am also frustrated with Paypal for taking so long to clear my dues here,(5 days so far and there supposedly is no problem) I was hoping I could post photos to the forum soon without having to do links. Anyway, maybe someone else would like to join you in my place? Hopefully I can pick up this or another mentorship in the near future. Thank you for all the good instruction. You guys sound like you are having a blast! |

No problem at all... just come back in when you get the opportunity! :)
PS...anyone that missed the assignment for this week still has time to post; I'll get the new assignment up on Sunday, or maybe even extend this one if you need more time. :) |

Well, it seems that this candid group has died, so I won't be coming up with any more lessons. Maybe someone with more experience and more motivational skills can offer to try to lead the group if you all wish to continue. I had a lot of fun though, and hope that you did as well. :)
