I am thinking of buying the maxxum 7d but have a few questions I can't seem to find answers for. I'll number them for ease of answering.
1.I hear of a propietary hot shoe. Can I use a pc sync cord for off party flashes?
2.Is the antishake turned on all the time or does it only activate as the shutter is pressed?
3.Can the auto focus assist flash be turned off or will it automatically flash? Does the pop up flash need to be up?
4.Can you completely turn off the lcd so it doesn't light up when you're eye is not on the viewfinder? For shooting in dark locations without distracting people with a bright light.
5. I hear the focus is louder than most. Is it loud enough to scare off a deer from about 30 feet or grab someones attention from the same distance or closer? Background noise being at a minimum.

Note that the Maxxum 5d is coming out soon. Not sure if this will affect your purchase or not.
Also download the manual before buying.

I read that it is only on while the shutter is open, so for a VERY brief period usually. Which saves a lot of power compared to lens-based IS. But unfortunately you can't see the effect in the viewfinder. |

I guess it's like mode 2 in the panasonic then. |

1. Yes, I use the PC sync socket for my flash. The 5D doesn't have a sync socket, but you can get an adapter that goes on the hotshoe and connects to a sync socket.
2. Only as the shutter is pressed. Exactly like mode2 on a Panasonic.
3. Assist flash can be turned off in the menu system. The popup flash has to be up for the assist flash to work. When I want to focus in extremely low light, it is possible to flick the flash up, then pop it back down when I have my focus lock.
4. I never use the LCD, there's little on it that I can't see through the viewfinder or by checking the buttons. So yes, it's very usable without that distracting back LCD.
5. I have no idea... I haven't used it too often in those condidtions. It really depends on your lenses as well. But I plan on using it in classical concerts where I can't draw attention to myself during quiet passages. I may use manual focus though. Canon's USM may have an advantage here, but I've not compared the two.
Let me know if you have any more questions! |

Thanks all for the feedback. This has made my decision much easier. These were the only questions I had left and all have been to my liking. I'll still download the manual first just to have a final look before ordering. |

BobsterLobster has answered all the questions vey well. Just to add to two of them:
The LCD cannot be turned off completely but it can be reduced in brightness. In addition, it turns off if the camera is raised to the eye, so some black tape over the sensor just below the eyepiece will turn it off completely.
Regarding focus, it's no louder than any other camera I've used. I find it is the lens mechanism that causes most noise rather than the camera mechanism. The manual focus button beside your right thumb is very convinient and easy to switch if you do need quit moments. |
