I love my entry, and will likely put it on the wall. It does not have any naked women or suggestive theme, it is just a pair of shoes. It is definitely NOT a snapshot. It could be in a magazine ad or maybe a Carson's catalog.

So if I were the only one scoring, I would have the blue!

Reality Check!

4.4

Personally I am disappointed in the version I uploaded, I did it at the last possible minute (for me as I had something that got in the way before my time zone's 11 pm deadline) and I wish I would've uploaded the other color variation of my shot. I did a sepiaish toning on my pic that is submitted and something got lost in DPC translation and it just seems much more muddy than it did in PS.

Does anyone know why that would be? I really need to get that fixed. My other shot was more colorful and maybe it would've translated better.

At least it was original amongst all the others.

fellow chicagoian - I have had that problem too but I think in my case it might be my monitor. My cat chews on the cords :) bad kitty. This was my first challenge entry can't believe how many submittals there were. I've been admiring all the amazing work from the members here and was afraid to submit but finally found the courage I too wish I could have uploaded a different v of mine but ahhh next time I'll watch the deadline closer.

I wouldn't say that many are "snapshots" because I'm sure people took time in the composition of the shot. However what I am notcing are a lot of pictures of shoes... JUST shoes. Nothing that really draws the attention of the viewer or adds any type of interest to the shot. I think what I am looking for other than something that has technical merit is something that stands out from the rest.

We all have shoes and we can all take pictures of shoes.... it's how you can photograph them with originality that makes a picture stand out (especially in a 500+ submission).

Just got a comment from you, Jaywalk. Thanks!! :)

08/31/2005 09:43:34 AM · #106
Well let me re-clarify that and say many *felt* like snapshots because you are right, Jay, obviously there was time in composition of the shot. But many shots had harsh flash reflection off the subject matter or a haphazard composition (things hanging off the shoes like pieces of hair or whatever) that made me feel like the shooter just hurriedly snapped the photograph, much like a snapshot.

Zap, my monitor is fine (no kitty chewing on cords, hehe) but there is definitely something lost in jpeg translation from my PS to DPC. I wonder if I need to check a box within PS to make it translate better.

Anyone? Anyone? Bueller??

Definitely agree here!

I'm not too upset with my score, I would give it a 4 if I were voting on it. But I am disappionted with a lot of the entries this time. It's like people thought"shoes, that's easy" and didn't even try.

I completely agree. Even with the "I'd vote 4 on mine" part. :) So many pictures of just.. shoes. Like, from a catalog or something. Nothing special as a photograph. I feel like I at least tried to give my picture some impact, although it isn't seemingly giving me any positive results. The challenge had 466 submission so I'm sure there will be a few gems hidden in the stack.

i really missed the mark this time i guess. about a 4.0 is what im receiving. this is certainly not a snapshot, and the highlights are intentional. another one bites the dust.

Still no comments and falling rapidly... Sigh...

I agree that a lot of people (Including me) just shot "Shoes" with not a lot of thought. Being my first entry I didn't want to try anything clever, though I think I took the brief a bit too literally.
The shots in there which I have scored really highly have more than just shoes in them, I should have though of that when I took my pic!!

mine is abstract, and is scoring solid 4's, just like i expected. No big deal. Don't stress out people. I shoot my ideas, not for scores. Pictures I shoot for 'high scores' are magazine covers, not art.

It will be a long week...

No, I didn't expect much from this photo, so no worries about it.
08/31/2005 10:27:57 AM · #115
I think the reason so many are getting such low scores is that there is a huge amount of entries in this challenge and a huge amount of people who have an interest in making yours score much lower than their own. (ooooh so cynical!)

I personally have given out more tens in this challenge than any other. I think some look snapshottish...but others..wow! I think their are some really incredible shots here!

Same here - mine is totally unique. Eitrher folks are not really looking at it, or the voters haven't got a clue. Either way, I am really feeling discouraged here at DPC now.

At least some comments on what to do differently. I am not thrilled with my entry. I loved my D&L but that's only hanging around 5.6??? - but I am receiving some feedback. Shoes 48 votes and no comments...it's early --so we'll see.

PLEASE comment! I know it's hard to comment on so many, but I find it easy my way-if I'm giving it a 4 or lower I comment right away, those people need to know what I think the problem was so they can learn stuff.
08/31/2005 11:01:17 AM · #120
I'm trying to comment on most of them, but it's going to take me a while to get around to it.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE leave me a comment on why you don't like the photo. This is all becoming frustrating.

I'm kind of upset with some of the shoe entries. I know that it's a subject where every photo is going to be a picture of a shoe, but I would think that the entries could have been more creative. My average score seems to be a 4. Sorry guys, just not enough creativity for me! =(

I freely admit my photo sucks. I fretted over it and almost pulled it at the very end. I only kept it in because I've been out and haven't participated in a few weeks.

My creativity - limited as it is - just couldn't bite on shoes. My apologies to all.

I'm sucking below 5 at this point. I think if it weren't a shoe challenge and it was just people voting on the photo itself, it might do better. I mean, how many pairs of work boots, converses, running shoes, etc can you look at and not be jaded? I gave 2 10's several 7-9 and LOTS of 4's and 5's. I think it's hard to find inspiration with shoes. As far as voting goes, it's hard to look at a pair of shoes, as good as the shot is, when you've already seen 15 other versions of the same thing. Am I right?
