A friend has asked me to go with her today to help her pick out a camera. She is not doing photography, just wants a camera that will do the job for family functions. I know she wants digital and probably doesn't need too many features.

She doesn't have any brand loyality, and I think her budget is $300-600. Any help??

Fuji F10 is a pretty good shooter, wide ISO range and easy to use. Falls into the price range, too.

From about every review I read on "regular" 3X or 4X zoom point & shoot cameras, the best on the market is definetly the Powershot A series from Canon, like the Canon Powershot A95.

Thank you all so much for your help. I have compared both on dpreview and are absolutely on our list of cameras to look at today. Thanks again....

I'm a huge fan of the Canon SD300, SD400 and SD500 line. The cameras are nice and compact, very well built with a metal casing, easy to use, huge preview/review screen on the back and they take AMAZING pictures. They also take pretty good video which may be good in your friends situation should she want to take some video clips of family.

You can get a really good deal on all these online at places like buydig and bh. I would suggest going to the store to try them all out and them buying online to save a bunch of money.

I agree that the Powershot series are nice cameras, but it depends on whether your friend is going to use any of the manual controls ever (which most people don't) and if she would liek something a bit more compact rather than the larger Powershot. I've played with both and they both take good pictures, however it all comes down to preference.

For the price range, maybe consider the canon powershot s1 IS or the powershot s2 IS. They're both great cameras (never used the s2, but I'm sure it's just a tad bit better than the s1, which I have) and I think both fall into the price range. Maybe if she had one that has good features for beginner photographers she might want to try her luck at it =D

A friend of mine has bought an Canon S2 and loves it. Feels quite nice too but haven't seen any results.

S1 is a good camera but lacks an AF assist lamp so it hunts for focus a lot in low light, which could be a problem for family style photography. AA batteries are good for family use too.

S2 fixes the AF lamp issue, has more MP and a few other new bells and whistles, plus the batteries last amazingly long. It would be a very good camera for general use.

A95 is also a great camera if the zoom range of the S2 is not needed.
