I feel really dumb. I have installed countless routers - wireless and hardwire - but tonight for some reason it just would not work.
A friend just bought a wireless router and asked if I would install it. It is a linksys model. I just installed one of these at one of my offices - win 98 system, cable modem, plug in the router, turn it on and go. BUT for some reason tonight, it just would not connect to the itnernet and wanted me to manually input the IP and stuff. Even when I did this, no connect. Am I missing something?
Computer can communicate with router - can call it up and look at the config
All cables are good as all were interchanged with the modem to make sure they worked
Router indicates it 'sees' the internet by way of light on front panel (all light indicators are good in fact)
Router indicates it sees the computer by way of light
Yet at the end of set-up it says it cannot connect to the internet.
When the router attempts to connect and can't, when you put the cable back directly in the computer, you have to run winipcfg and release and renew all connects before it will go online but then everything is ok
What am I missing?
(The system is not in front of me now, but all responses of genuine help will be appreciated and tried tomorrow.) |

Cable or aDSL modem and who is the provider? Earthlink DSL (et el) uses PPPoE to connect and that has to be set in the router to get out to the Internet.
Static Entries on the PC (especially DNS) can give you fits... you can be set to DHCP to obtain IP from router but a Static DNS entry can cause browser to not resolve names.
(I'll check back here in a few, 5 o'clock whistle and I'll be at the ranch in ten). |

pppoe ? static ip ? just dhcp?
my guess it got flipped from pppoe to static ..
pppoe will work as a dhcp client
(the way i have it set at home )
static ip (way we have interal alternate wifi at work)
or dhcp (firewall at work) ?
hope this helps ... which brand of box ?

Hmm....
Linksys router
Cable modem - Adelphia is provider
Win 98 system
No firewall except in router - tried enabled and disabled, no change
Tried all: pppoe, static, dhcp, manual settings, none worked (I thought pppoe was for ADSL only?)

It is likely a MAC address issue. Several broadband providers today assign IP address based on MAC address. Your computer is hooked up, you get an IP. When you unplug it and connect it to the router the ISP sees a different MAC and will not give it an IP. Unplug the cable modem for about 15 minutes so that the ISP recycles the MAC and then power things back on - modem, router, computer. If that doesn't work, contact the ISP to clear the MAC. |

MAC address....damn! I knew it would probably be something simple. Adelphia does that too and I should have known. I bet that is it.
ggbudge - the settings/tabs and stuff are different on the linksys and the wireless I didn't even get to yet. I am trying to get the desktop to communicate first. Their wireless capable laptop has not even been out of the box yet. |

Yup... PPPoE is generally used by aDSL, networks where you have to provide a Login and Password to access the internet.
I had similar the other day where my 54G Linksys and DSL modem gave all indications that my network was fine, but I could not browse to the internet. TraceRT would kind of work and pings would fail just wierd stuff. My Speedstream DSL modem is about 5 years old so I started suspecting that. I swapped out all parts as I have (2) of everything and all was the same. (edit) put everything back to the way I had my network.
Called Earthlink and they reported no problems in my area (covad down here...). Said screw it and went to editing photos and then tried browsing inet again in two hours and all was well. I have to believe that Earthlink was having DNS issues... but like MCI (if you have ever reported a problem with them you get "Oh no noting is wrong here" but 10 minutes later everything works fine) gave me the It's not us it has to be you speech, yah right...

I have a wireless router - won't work on G modems, works on B modems fine. Maybe?

This might be something obvious, but just in case...
Did you change the IP of the router? The default on the Linksys is the same as the modem for my DSL provider. I change the IP on my router and all is well. |

Unhook the router and tap into someone else's unsecured wi-fi network in the area. ;-) |

This sounds like the exact problem I had recently. I had to enter the WEP key into the computer. I had to call the internet provider to get the WEP key (although I think you can find it on the computer somehow). Hopefully this helps. Good luck! |

Well thank you hou1tsj! That is exactly what it was and I should have known. I do feel stupid. All is well in the wireless world on Peace Valley Farm though.
Thanks for all the suggestions/help/recommendations! |
