don't normally bother posting to this sort of thing, but i thought i should announce the world that a ribbon is imminent; one that is distinctly browny in nature :( still, this is a marked improvement on an hour ago...

i just want to say that there sure were some beautiful pictures on the wide angle. most of the pictures were scored by me=10. there were none below 5. i just hope i start taking as good a photos as was entered in the wide angle challenge.

What I noticed is that I have twice as many views as votes, which is kind of unusual.

I followed the letter, if not the spirit of the challenge, so I'll be happy breaking 5.0

What is the defenition of a wide angle picture?

Is it 50mm or less?

Or is it the picture has to have some distortion due to the use of wide angle lens?
10/17/2005 09:06:33 AM · #37
The challenge was to take the widest angle picture your gear was capable of.

That was what I thought until I got these comments
Just wondering if I misunderstood the challenge or most of the voters.
Guess most of the voters are misunderstanding.
hahahahahaahaha

>This doesn't look wide angle more about 50mm or so. Am I right?

>I don't get any feeling that you used a wide-angle for this picture.

my score is haning around 5 for a decent picture - guess it needs more wide angle feeling.

I got a similar comment on a photo I took with a 10mm lens. Geez... how wide does it have to be? ;-)

perhaps we can add another piece of information to the data collected when we submit a photo and that would be focal length. It is available in the EFIX data and might be an interest to some. we already collect the lens.

OK, dumb question but call me clueless, will someone explain the "mm" sizes and what defines "wide" I am still beginning and don't have a clue when it comes to lens specifics. Do I assume the bigger, the wider? I used what was built into my camera. I noticed several titles had reference to this but it doesn't mean a thing to someone like me(hopefully there are others out there like me)

Currently I have dropped to 5.0588. I hope its not due to equipment.

AzCKelly,

10mm is wider than 75mm. Others can share more technical explanation but there is the short one.

Smaller # = wider.
For the Nikon Coolpix 8700 you have a range of 35mm (wide) to 280mm (telephoto). (You can view your camera's details here.

(35mm is not very wide--on my camera it is the equivalent of a 50mm on a 35 mm camera....but don't let that get to you until you understand the basic part first.)

That said, I'm giving a HUGE leeway to the images, the description did say to use what you have available to you. There are, however, perspective "tricks" which would accentuate the angle of view as being wide.

BTW, how are all you folks who have wide-angle portrait shots doing? (I was afraid to enter anything in that orientation because I thought the average voter would think wide-angle = width and not = height.)

Edit to remove overly large signature.

Wide angle lenses show a particularly large field of view. On your camera, 35mm is the widest angle when you zoom out. The view gets even wider as the focal length of the lens gets smaller (28mm, 24mm, 18mm...). 10mm is REALLY wide, and fisheye lenses are extremely wide angle.

Honestly, this is lower than I expected. With no comments so far, I haven't yet been able to figure this one out. I have also taken a bit of a dive...rouhgly 10% lower than at 8am this morning.

Oh well, it's all in good fun...now off to eat something.
