I got a similar comment on a photo I took with a 10mm lens. Geez... how wide does it have to be? ;-) |
Me too - and mine was with the Zenitar 16mm fisheye, I had trouble keeping my feet out of the image ;-)

I'm bleeding badly from a Troll attack. Is there a doctor in the house?

Just finished my first pass through all the shots and now I know why I'm scoring a 5.02.
Great job people! There are some creative shots in there. |

I just wanted to comment... and I hope you all don't mind... but what I am looking for while I'm judging is not only does it look like you used a wide angle lens... but ALSO does the subject you are shooting lend itself well to a wide angle image.
I often find on this site that people take some random picture just to enter the contest, and personally I want to view art, not just a snapshot. While it is true, that you may have used your very widest lens possible - may it be 10 mm or 35 mm - I'm looking for more... a wide angle picture, something ENHANCED by the use of that lens/setting. I like to see that there was some thought put into the image in terms of where the person was standing, what they chose to include in the frame, the angle the picture was taken at etc.

I wish i would have used this idea for this challenge, i thought about re-doing it but some how it would not have felt right to do so (no challenge in repeating)
the one i used for this weeks challenge is not doing that bad but not good enough :) |

As one of the plebeian, I don't have the burden of voting on this challenge. The task of giving 10s and picking favorites would have been overwhelming. You guys are good.

I've been up and down between 5.5 and 5.7 all day.
BUT the competition is so good, I don't even care. My shot pales in comparison to so many others. WOW - I say it again. This is a GREAT challenge to view.

i have 9 very good comments. Most of them saying very creative idea and well executed. I'm wondering why score is steadily going down.
I like this challenge, lots of great photos. |

I would do ANYTHING to be in the 5.5 range right now. Learning how to setup your camera for a shot is much harder than I had imagined. With that said, I still love my new gear and wouldn't give it up for anything!
I guess you guys will have to put up with me and my 4.somethings for a while until I can get things sorted out. BUT ONCE I DO LOOK OUT! HEHEHEE!

After shooting photos at 18mm, I found my self browsing on line for 10mm lenses... not good right now:)
Dang, that wide angle can be fun.

I have no problem with the approach you say you are using in scoring this challenge. But what puzzles me is a photojournalism major saying they "want to view art"; seems like a bit of a non sequitur to me. Regardless, it's nice to see your nick appear again in these forums after a long absence. Hope you like my entry.

Hey coolhar!! hahaha... yeah... I guess not art... but from a more artistic view... even photojournalism students are told to get different angles on things, and not get your average view. I guess that's what I was trying to say! However I do tend to take a slightly different approach to judging here at DPC than if I was judging the clip contest at www.Sportsshooter.com I find photos of humans and landscape photos to be quite different :-p.

And It's been steadily going up since yesterday...if I could finish in the 6+ range I would be the happiest person alive.
I still find it funny that I just used a normal lense and cropped the picture a little so it looked wider. I think it depends more on the subject matter rather than how wide your picture looks.
I can't wait for the new challenge to start tonight...mmhmm

Good Luck on the 6.
You're right. It does depend on the image or subject and how it lends itself to a wide perspective. Some images in the Challenge, wide angle or not, would look exactly the same, in some instances, even if they were close-in shots. Not that they are bad in any way, other than not having a powerful, wide-angle feel.

It's been a strange trip for me. I entered what I think is one of the best landscapes I've posted in DPC, absolutely wide-as-snot-wide, and it started off like gangbusters: 7.5ish after 20 votes. Then it took an utter nosedive down to 5.4ish after 70 or so votes, and has been clawing its way back up ever since, so it's just a tiny fraction under 6 after 140 votes. If I'm lucky I'll break 6.
I really thought this one was gonna go top ten, and I don't often think that about my entries... sigh...

funnily enough, it's been like that for my pic too (although I didn't see 7!), 6.4 after 50 votes or so then dropped to 5.7... now back up to 5.9 but I'll feel lucky if it breaks 6 again!

There are so many terrific shots I think I could pick 15 as ribbon contenders. I'm sure others are having a hard time. I gave out a ton of well deserved 8's which I normally don't do. I'm at around 5.7 and I'm happy with that, considering the quality of photos in this challenge.
Now Grain? That's another subject entirely. ;~D
