I've always loved the "sardine can" rollaway convertible top, and the fold-down windows. : ) |

I always understood that was the origin of the other name: 2 (deux) Chevaux, for the 2-horsepower engine it originally came with.
I had an ID-19 wagon and saw one of these at my mechanic's. I looked through the side louvres of the front hood (you can see out the other side), and I asked him when he was going to put the engine back in.
He replied that the engine was installed already ....
I have some photos of these -- I'll try and track them down and post them. |

Ahhhh - a Deux Chevaux.
These things were ALL over France & Switzerland when I lived there.
Many fond memories riding in these bouncy wonders.
A corregated sheet metal-rolling wonder on springs. never imported here due to safety reasons - they had no safety features!
As I remember, these had the shifter coming out of the dash. |

The 2CV aka the Deux Cheveaux. Citroen is funny that way, if you say 2CV in French, it sounds kinda like Deux Cheveaux.
The modern equivalent is the Smart Car from Mercedes

I wanted to say it was a Messerschmitt, and when I searched Messerschmitt in Google Images I got this: 3 cars. Look in upper right, the center car: same one. But I don't think it's a Messershmitt even so. I looked through some of those other names, but no joy. We need a German member to look through this page...

I just posed the question to a group of 40,000+ automotive service members on a network I am a member of. Maybe it will ring a bell with someone. |

You see those relatively frequently in Luxembourg considering their age. They're called 'Ducks' here.

The 2CV was also the star in JamesBond "for your eyes only".
My father always threatened to buy me one as a first car and paint it like a lady-bug. They always remind me of Jelly-moulds...

Damn, that's it. Should have remembered Goggomobil! These were on the road when we lived in Switzeralnd. Plus tons of 2CVs as well. In fact, it cracks me up to see the 2CV described as a "rare" car, they're anything BUT (or were...) in France & Switzerland, at least.

I've been away a couple days and didn't catch your response until now.
this is great. Its nice knowing what this is. This is one of my favorite shots too. When I saw this car in the parking lot i thought is was interesting enough to take a picture of it. So I took out my camera AND my tripod. As I was composing the shot and getting it in focus I had my eye down in the veiwfinder long enough to not notice the owners returning. They just walked into the shot and got in the car. I've always wondered what they thought about me taking that picture. Thanks for the help with this. cool!
