I have a 20D but I lost the manual and can't find any good online tutorials that talk about how to set a custom white balance. How often is that necessary? Should you do a custom white balance for every single different situation you're in...even from room to room? Also, how do you do it!? I can't figure it out. Thanks!

Custom white balance should be set for each individual lighting situation you find yourself in. You can also shoot in raw mode and auto white balance and adjust the white balance after you shoot.

You want to take the custom WB reading off of something neutral in color (such as a white or grey object) in the same lighting that your subject will be lit by. You can even carry around a white or grey card to take the reading off of as long as it's in the same light as your subject. Probably very important to use this method in mixed lighting situations as it gives the photographer the greatest control and is most accurate. |

That's pretty cool thanks for the info.
For custom white balance I carry different colored paint sample cards from Lowes (I found that they seem to have larger ones than most that are all one color instead of different shades on one card) and if I want to try something different I just whip one out and do a custom balance...of course with RAW I don't use them as much since I can play more in there but it is handy when I'm shooting JPG.
