I have a voting system very similar to yours. I give a pretty liberal interpretation of the challenge, but if I can't see the connection even with that, the score gets pounded. Sorry. That's the way I am.

HOWEVER, not everyone is as crusty and bitter as I am. I don't think a regimented voting scale would work in this kind of environment where everyone votes the way they feel. If we complicate it, less people would participate, I think.

This site definitely favors its "popular" photographers, but not during voting, which I have to think is pretty fair.

The guys that hang out here a lot, really contribute to the site, both in terms of their forum posts, comments, and quality of work, get a lot more attention from the masses. For instance, I could post an outtake and ask for comments, and get maybe 1 or 2 replies. Setzler could do the same, and his would get pages of replies. And that's the way it should be. He contributes much more to this site than I do.

In a prievious post by another member there was comments made like "I saw your photos and results, you have nothing to complain about" (not a direct quote, I am at work and don't have time to read back through all of them) I did not see where the member was saying anything about their results or pictures..... Nor did anyone mention anything about ribbons etc.... some of the comments are getting very nasty and have NOHTING to do with the inital comment. If you don't understand a comment ask before you quote back with a nasty reply.

Many more threads like this and they won't be. If you really want to drive everyone away with petty accusations (not you welcher) then carry on, pretty soon there'll only be 3 of you left and you can all win ribbons every week. Think how happy you'll be.

Onie, I don't think Jimmythefish is being nasty. I think you should come back when you are not so upset and then reread what was writen. Sometimes we let things get to us when we are in a bad mood. I have done the very same thing. Take a break and come back later. :-)

dltruex, Not sure what you are ranting about, but things will get better. Just by looking at your profile you have the eye and talent it takes to be a winner. Keep submitting and you'll find that the longer you are here the more you will learn. Remember we all have ups and downs.

Sonifo, I am not in a bad mood at all, there you go assuming something that IS NOT SO, I did not say anywhere in my post I WAS UPSET. I will say yet again, my point is people should be allowed to speak without having comments being made like the one you just posted, I did not ask you if I needed to take a break and come back later. This is quite entertaining actually.

As is your little tirade...so someone is allowed to present points, issues, arguments etc. for public consumption and yet nobody can respond in kind? What if I want to rant about a rant? I'm not allowed to do so? That's not reasonable, nor is it equitable. If a rant is designed to affect change, dialogue is necessary. If you're going to stand on your soapbox in the rant forum, expect to be heckled. This is especially true if the rant is as illogical, unclear and unsubstantiated as the initial post.

In response to the initial post:
I don't think that the popularity of the photographer affects the ranking. There are a few photographers that consistently rank high, but I think it has more to do with their style and quality rather than who they are. I really don't think that there is much of a "behind-the-scenes" conspiracy going on. There are a few people who share their photos with eachother before or during the challenge, but I don't know of anyone giving out higher scores to their friends. I don't do much commenting at all unless I know whose photo it is. After I've finished voting, I'll ask my friends which photos are theirs so that I can go comment. I think I give pretty honest critiques though, and I don't change the scores.
There are often photos in the top ten that got a score of 5 from me, and I often disagree with the top scorers. It's all about the popularity of the photo though - whether you agree or not. Since I often don't agree with the top scorers, I don't really expect to be scoring in the top 3 much. That doesn't mean I'm not learning anything or enjoying the process though.
