Hey, I just noticed this was a third personal best! Except for the fact that she is smack in the middle of two ash trays full of cigarette butts, you should be happy! :) |

I thought this was a brilliant image and gave you a 10 for it simply on the strength of the image, and the technial ability of the image .

I guess there may be voters out there who would give low scores to any image that they perceive as a threat to their own path to a ribbon.
Just like in the weakest link - quite often the smartest get voted out, not the dumbest, the masses thus increasing their chances of glory.

I kind of like testing the water. I entered an emotive on the fence kind of shot in the D&L challenge. Figured I was gonna get burnt at the stake. Instead I recieved the highest score yet in a challenge, 5.896 or something like that. Sure, I got a few very negative comments, but overall I was very please. I knew I would probably offend some people, just as you should have expected it.
Good image and congrats.

A vicious circle develops; when a challenge asks for something slightly less precise - as in this case, an industrial 'feel' - I still rather hope that that'll give some leeway to the entries to be a little less directly obvious (i.e. that people might accept something other than smokestacks as having potential). However, we see over and over again that the directly obvious choice of subject wins the challenge, and so people go all out to get the directly obvious choice. The more the obvious subjects win, the fewer people find the energy to be more interesting, and the more we lose the contribution of some interesting photographers around here.
All things pass, I guess. |

I don't see it as being a circle, more of a decline since I've been here.
I think someone mentioned Dr Jones in this thread earlier and how his images were quite acceptable here, but not now.
Perhaps the site is becoming more conservative, just look at the views of a few vocal members in the rant forum.
It's a shame people can't see images for what they are instead of an affront to their own moral ethics, photography is about art and expressing yourself. |

It stinks about all the low votes you received... I wish I had voted, it would have given you another 9. I love your interpretation on this challenge and only wish I could be as creative as you to even think of things like this. |

Thanks Tina, I won't even claim to be the most creative soul here. But,I don't hold back an idea. AS an art form, I admire the pin-up and hoped to recreate some of its glory and felt this was an obvious challenge to push that agenda.
I'll be a paid member shortly after the New Year, as I believe the playing field is more open in those ranks. I must admit, I never expected so many people to "run to the rescue" of this photo when I posted this forum.
That said, I can't thank you all enough for your comments. Wow, I'm just in awe. Thanks guys, ALL of you!

I've received some pretty low votes on images I considered "art" too. Personally I think your image is great. I didn't vote on it, but if I did, I would've gone easily with a 7ish, maybe higher (depending on my mood). I actually had a similar idea, but didn't have the chance to shoot it. Way to think out of the box, and don't let a few negative comments get you down. Great work, keep shooting!

Hmmm. I liked this, especially the idea of it, but there is something about the execution of it that didn't quite do it for me. Perhaps it's the lighting, perhaps it's the sheen on her body, perhaps it's the composition. In reality, it's probably a combination of these. There's nothing really wrong here, but for whatever reason (can't put my finger on it really) it doesn't work all that well for me, at least in the context of the challenge. That's not to say I voted low, but there were other images that better captured the "industrial feel", despite the fact that they weren't nearly as original. |

There are several posts attacking the voters..... I resent that. Just because YOU call it art means nobody is allowed an opinion that differs?
I call it a cheap way of "selling".
I have NO problem with nudes whatsoever, I'm not the least bit prudish. I'll happily look at either gender, too, but only if they make sense to be there.
For example if you were to take a photo of a beach that includes some nudes, then that is fine, it makes sense for them to be there. For all I know, perhaps the photo wasn't even staged, but a lucky candid. Great!
However if you photograph a naked woman changing a car tire in the snow on the highway (and you're not trying to be funny), then that is just ridiculous.
Nobody in their right mind would work on machinery stark naked, it makes NO sense.
I didn't vote on that challenge. Had I voted, your pic would have started with an 8 for the photo, then lost 2 or 3 points for the nude.
I don't care that she looks lovely and that the photo is nice, I disagree with using sex to sell stuff that has nothing to do with sex.

[devil's advocate]
Uhmm... how many nudes do you see that are classified as "art" that are images of situations that never occur in real life? How often do people take off all of their clothes, wrap themselves in sheer fabric, and strike uncomfortable poses? For that matter, how many people do you know that roll around on the floor stark naked in ideal lighting? I've seen very few candid "nudes". Nudes are usually posed and the lack of clothing is usually used either to make a statement, or to study the human form in detail.
Personally I think the OP's idea was to make a statement about things that do not go together. This is common in all forms of art and often makes a very powerful statement. Show me a candid nude and I'll show you plenty of nudes that "don't make sense".

Take a look at the thumbtack challenge and you'll find thumbtacks in the most ridiculous places ever but that doesn't negate the merit of the photograph.
Take a look at any number of top rated fashion photographers and you'll see imagery such as this in abundance (clothes and no clothes). This is a valid and widely accepted form of photography used and showcased worldwide.

Feel free to do "weird" things like unnatural poses etc when the situation calls for it - for example in a "Nudes" challenge, as part of an exhibition about nudes, at the local nudist camp's community board - there are many places where nudes of any sort are appropriate.
Feel free to sell me adult toys with the help of nudes, and you can be as graphic as you like about it, I won't complain at all *g*.
However, DON'T try to sell me car polish by showing a photo of a car with a nude woman draped over it (quoting a real advertisment here) - THAT just makes me very angry. |

You might be upset about placing 61st, but a similar photo in this same challenge placed 210th!
It seems like you did get a lot of credit for artistry and technical merit.

I wasn't aware of the fact he was trying to sell anything. If that's the case, I'll take two of those grinders!!!
I was under the impression he was going for a modernistic look at vintage pin-ups and IMHO was very successful.
