The challenge that I am trying to enter closes today (12/27/05) and I keep getting the response that my "ile size exceeds 150K". I've got it down to 98K and still get this response. I don't want to go any lower for fear of submitting a horrible looking picture. Please help soon! (or email directly at yakatme@bellsouth.net ) |

what software are you using to resize the file?

What program are you using to resize/compress?
If Photoshop, use save for web. The EXIF and some windows files piggy-back the image, and even though it says 98Kb, windows tacks extra on it.
Great tutorial here:
Using Photoshop to Prepare Photos for DPC Challenges

Are you sure you are submitting the right file? I have two directories with simlar names...i somtimes am in the wrong one and don't know it.
Proper file format? (JPG, etc)?
Sure the image size is corect (640 or smaller, etc on a side?)
if all that checks out, upload it to some website and see what it says teh file size is there (pbase, DPC, etc)

I'm using Save For Web in Photoshop. If PS tacks on extras, how low can I go and still have a presentable image? |

i've never heard of PS tacking on extra stuff that increased the file size... if it says 149k it's always let me submit it. Dunno what could be wrong except it's the wrong file. |

Are you being told specifically you are over the 150k limit, or is the dimensiouns too large? I made that mistake with an earlier submission.

If using save for web, you can go right up to 150k.
Double-check the file name & location. PS Save for web strips everything out other than image data. If you notice, say a 150Kb file attatched to an email may say it's 190Kb - it's a windows thing, though the file size really hasn't changed. You may have a cache issue here. When you save for web, what is the file size in the lower left corner saying it is in Kb? |

I've got to 640 by 427 pixels |

save for web will use the last subdirectory that was used in SAVE FOR WEB - so it can go most anywhere on your HD.
Try save for web again (any image) and see what path is there.
Have you looked at the file in Explorer and see the file size there - what does it say?

In the lower left side of Save For Web, my current version of my image now says 128.4K. Also in reply to another post regarding submitting the correct file, I've double checked, and it's right. I'v made no less than 12 attempts. |

Try closing your browser, clear out internet temp files/cache and restart and try again. |

On Explorer properties, it says my file size is 471 kb?????? Why the difference and what should I do to fix the submission? Should I keep going lower and lower on PS until explorer finally show something below 150kb? |

You must have a setting wrong in PS -save for web OR you are looking at the wrong subdirectory. It is JPG and NOT html, right? i have PS try to save the image as HTML once in a while
try just plain SAVE AS and adjust the compression to get the file under 150k

I finally got it sized correctly. Check out the image in the Patterns Challenge if you'd like to see if it was worth all the effort. It's titled [deleted]. Thanks for your help everybody.

Sorry about the image title. I'm new to this and only thought it might be a problem after I posted it. I guess I was a little over-excited about my first entry. |
