I don't think I'II enter this week I don't want to go out and activly seek "despair" surely this should be a subject one comes across by accident? I fear any entry I could make would be intrusive or trivialise peoples lives.

There is nothing that says you have to photograph real despair. You could always stage something. Just a thought.

Do photojournalists trivialise peoples lives? Or do they make their pain known to the world so that others are aware and can maybe do something to help?
Maybe you have an idea to give the impression of despair rather than using people?
I am sure there are many ways to do this.

I'm sorry but i think staging despair trivialises real despair and could also make a viewer feel foolish on descovering that it was staged

I was giving you an alternative so you can submit. I don't think anyone will hold it against you if you stage it as long as it doesn't look too faked. As Karen said there may be a way without having people in the photo. I can understand you not wanting to activly seek out despair but maybe you will learn something as a person and a photographer by giving it a shot.

Do you feel the same way about Hollywoods portrayal of emotions?

Despair could be a child studying for a test at school showing that fear of the upcoming test all over his/her face. Could be someone digging out from the winter storms. A cat stuck up a tree. Something spilled. There are lots of things other than human sufferings that can be despair. I actually think I already have my entry but I am gonna wait a day or two to see if something better comes up.

I have plenty of ideas just the only problem is... how do I get my friends to pose that way?

No but when I watch a movie I know they are actors if I look at next weeks pictures how will I know if they are real or not? without the pictures being put in context how can I tell

I'II be able to comfort myself if I find myself in this position that at least I'm supplying someone with a good photo oppurtunity

Despair - total hopelessness, that feeling of having given up..

Why do you think it has to be a purely human emotion?
Why can't objects personify despair?
Think about things in your everyday life that convey that feeling of despair to you...

This will be an easy one for me... I'm a teacher. I'm laying the groundwork now for 10 students in complete and utter despair by Friday :)

It's fun to be the teacher :)

I was going to set up the camera on a timer, make a little word ballon in photoshop that said "3.9?!?", then hang it by fishing wire over my head as I gave a despaired look at the computer. But I figured someone else would do it.
