Okay, I admit I'm older than dirt. But I simply don't understand this younger generation. Witness the following: 1) My son works as a game designer for Arena Net; 2) Awhile ago they released a game called Guild Wars; 3) It sold a few Million copies; 4) They held a world championship and gave away a quarter Million dollars in prize money; 5) Now a Korean rocker has made a Music Video tribute to the game ... Click Here to see it.
I'm proud of him, you understand, but seriously, ..., I think the world is getting away from me.
Is there hope for me?

Is it a cool game? You might be a bit older than me - I am almost as old as dirt. Love games though. Not very good at them, but still enjoy it.
Talk about younger generation - when I was a kid and did wrong AND GOT CAUGHT - my parents gave me a good hiding and send me to my room as punishment - Nowadays kids have so much entertainment in their rooms (including your sons game...) that I must send my kids to my room for punishment.

I don't understand my generation either. :/
The video is Chinese, by the way. I'm doubting that's a tribute to the game. More like a promotion.

There must be some hope, after all, you are using a digital camera and not still stuck in only the (gasp) film mode. Baby steps....baby steps...

It is difficult to imagine being a youngster today. When I was a child my greatest worry was the mean dog I encountered every day walking to school, followed in close succession by my 3rd grade teacher's ruler. But today's children face an incredible array of hazards, from predators to terrorist's bombs. No great surprise that video games and bizarre entertainers are so popular with today's youth, an escape proportional to the times. I am proud of today's young people, facing the bewildering challenges of living in the 3rd millenium, taking it all in stride and succeeding magnificently. |

FWIW, that's not a Korean. He's a Taiwanese singer. I can't understand song lyrics very well yet, and the subtitles are terribly distorted by video compression, but I can understand him far better than I could a mainlander singing.
His name is Lu JianZhong. Lu is his last name.
Taiwanese are really big on online gaming.
REALLY big on online gaming.
Most internet cafe's have special rates for people who play more than 13 hrs in a row.
Zipes! I used to be a pretty hardcore gamer when I was younger, but I rarely passed the 12 hour straight mark.
EDIT: I see I was beaten while I paused my writing to watch the video after it finally loaded.
I agree that it's much more of a promotion than anything else. I've seen all kinds of promotional stuff like this in Western music videos and Chinese is no different.
All the major stars have their deals. Big name computer games can easily afford to pay for a music video tie in with a big name singer.
Maybelline recently did a spot with a local Taiwanese singer that also did a fair bit of cross merchandising for Mercedes. She uses clips from the television ad in her music video. I think it's pretty funny.

Koreans are also very into online gaming. There was a guy in Korea last year who died from playing online games too much due to lack of sleep and poor nutrition. |

Simply put:
Our parents pushed our society to be faster, quicker, more high strung. Just as their parents before them did, as did your grand-parents. We've reached a pace of society that even with fast food, fast cars and fast internet you can't keep up.
You wake up, you go to work, you get stuck late at work, you get home. Now it's 7pm if not later. You gotta eat. So your choice is crap fast food or another hour lost. So here it is it's 8pm....you've got two hours to "live life" if you want to go to bed at a reasonable time. Or you stay up till midnight, 1am or later and try to get some enjoyment. You need something to veg'out the brain. As we've gotten away from manufacturing jobs and moved more and more to information jobs. No long am I just building in a factory plant with my mind free. Nope...I am burning my brain cells on information all day long. I get home, my mind is fried. I need to veg. If I don't get an hour or two minimum veg time than I am fried the next day. And if I simply go to sleep I'll fall into morbid depression because...well, who wants to live a life where you live to wake up, work, and then sleep. Nothing in between.
So these games allows a means to veg-out, but they add another factor. A means to "escape" reality. Very much akin to TV. However, they offer one thing that TV tends not too. In TV you follow a scripted path as a mere observer. In a immersive video game you get to have an element of "control" and manipulate the events. So really just think of these video games as interact television. Instead of watching Gandalf and the fellowship choose to climb the wintery mountains you are right there and you get to make the choice.
