How long have photographers been begging for comments when voters voted low on their submissions? And now, all those voters who seemingly couldn't find the time before to do so, are now voting like hell to get their rates up to get into one challenge???

I got a few comments today from members that I know need their comment rates go up, but I can't really say their comments made a lot of sense. Can't write them down or I would give away which photo is mine.
What a childish behaviour, if they can find the time to comment now, why couldn't they find it before.

I'm eligible to submit, but now I really don't know yet if I will go through with it.

DOH! Now it makes sense... I was wondering why I've been getting so many comments on my Window Framed entry all of a sudden. ROFL

Yep. What started out as a challenge to reward contributors (those who take the time to leave comments) has turned out to be another abuse of the system.

Perhaps it would help to think of it as akin to the annual Great American Smokeout, where they challenge people to give up cigarettes for just one day, on the theory that if they try that and make it through, they'll be able to continue afterwards.

By showing people that commenting isn't as hard, time-consuming, or dangerous as previously-thought, they might continue this new habit after this challenge is over.

Or, as the old (and now revived) commercial puts it, "Try it, you'll like it!"

Does the comments given and received change as you give them? I thought stats were updated weekly if I recall...

As long as those members leave legitimate comments, it isn't abuse. This challenge serves two purposes: First, to reward those who comment; and second, to encourage those who are a little short of the goal to step up and comment more.

That said, anyone who leaves meaningless or cut/paste comments to get in to the challenge is abusing the system, and we encourage you to use "report post" to call such cases to our attention.

Oh, I dunno, while some people may try to abuse just about anything, I've received so many good comments today that I've even turned off my usual "Critique Club" request. And the comments are good ones, not one word types.

But then, my comments given are about 2200-something vs. 1100 (+-)received.

And my entry in the Free Study was #18.

Holy crap! You've made more than 14,000 comments?! That's an average of about 17 comments per day, every day since you joined two years ago! What an asset!

I agree! My stats are solid but I will not enter this challenge. I don't want to be seen to be joining a whole bunch of people who over an extended time don't deserve to be there. I think this last minute scramble is unseemly, an abuse and a poke in the eye for those who consistently work hard to share via comments.

If in the extremely unlikely event that someone comes to their senses and pegs qualification at the challenge announcement stats then I will enjoy competing. Right now I just feel no reward, in fact a kick in the teeth for my 8 month stats of

Nice to see ya come in there SJ. Over 2:1 comments made is a great ratio. I'm not even close to that.

I guess that is one way of looking at it. However, I feel that this challenge is a great motivator for those people who don't leave as many comments. I started another thread today asking for comments on some of my low comment entries. I have received some of the very best comments ever as a result of this, and if this allows someone else to enter this challenge then all the better. I don't mind the extra competition because I look at it as additional opportunities to learn by their examples (cause chances are they are better than me).

...But this is all just my opinion.

Just for the record...I have made more comments in the last 2 days than I've made since I've been here. For one thing, being new, I questioned my ability to properly critique someones work. But I'm learning ever so much from here and feel more confident in doing so. But MAINLY because, if anyone caught my earlier thread today Thanking DPCer's, because I finally got my new one-handed keyboard, making my typing so much easier and efficient. And BTW...I'm not entering the 48hr challenge, because I have a ribbon wrapped up in Cliches.....(I wish) :O)

But you are all so right...I've rec'v more comments on my Window challenge than any other before.

Cindy, if it makes you feel any better, I'm legally blind. I can't legally get a driver's license and my vision is near 20/150 corrected.

I belive photography centers a person and helps them to surpass their "handicaps".
