Hi Mauricio. The first one you should get is just a clear UV filter to go over your lens to protect it. The second is definately polarizer. The circular polarizer from Tiffen is the one I use and works great for me. If you're going to use the polarizer, you should remove the UV filter or you will have a problem with vignetting. The next one I purchased was an ND8 (neutral density). It reduces the amount of light coming in to allow very long exposures. The most recent I purchased but I really haven't done too much with it is a graduated ND grey filter by Cokin. The graduated filter is used mainly to even out the exposure if there is a very bright sky and not-so-bright land.

Not sure about using a polarizer for portraits, it's mainly used to eliminate reflections and cut down on haze/glare in skys, so this is a good filter for your outdoors shots.
For portraits, a warming filter is nice for skin tones and if you shoot black and white, a green filter is good for evening out skin tones. |

I have 3 filters that I use quite a bit. I've replaced my UV filter with an 81A filter by Sunpak. Outdoors, it basically acts like a UV filter. Its most effective indoors without flash. My indoor pictures without flash always came out really yellow. That cut down on the yellow. This is what I was trying to get away from //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=6984
I have an 8pt star filter by Sunpak. I really love the star filter effect. //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=12044
The third one I use is a Hoya R72 Infrared filter. I'm still practicing with that one. I'm having problems getting the images to come out clear. My latest attempts have improved as I've been manually focusing the camera, then attaching the filter and taking the picture so the Autofocus isn't affecting anything. Infrared photography is very unique and interesting. You definitely have to have a bright sunny day to shoot with it. At least from my limited experience with it.
Good Luck finding one! |

You might want to just use the camera a while and see what sorts of situations you're in the most. Lately, I'm always thinking "I could take this shot if I had a wide angle lens" so I think that's next on my list of purchases.
I use my polarizer quite a bit outdoors to help with reflections on glass and water or to keep the sky from washing out so much. If you're going to take a lot of macro shots then you might want a macro set, but I'd suggest waiting until you've tried doing that sort of shot to see if you actually need it. I don't carry mine around so I usually just end up having to back off a little and then crop the shot once I get home.
I ordered my filters at The Filter connection on www.2filters.com and was happy. You might want to compare their prices. |

Thank you all. I am starting my collection in filters. I just buy a Polarizer one, I already have a wide angle with macro, I am going to use all this info to see if an IR will work for me and what kinds of filters are in the market. The place I like to shop is in San Antonio, is called Camera Exchange, I like to see what is the thing I am buying.
Thank you again. |
