lovely of you to assume she deliberately made a child cry. Amazing really, Those of you that assume she must have MADE them cry probably have children or photgraph children that are used to a camera and yourself. I have witnessed many an occassion where a child taken to a studio by mummy and daddy in the hope that they will come home with some lovely memories of their little angels only to discover the child screams the whole time or at least gets upset initially. If the photographer had the foresight to be ready to capture these very real images of the terrible 2's n 3's then kudos to her. Do you really think she made them cry for her own gain? all I can say is PUHLEASE

first note: I don't care what she does, but before you get hammered, I just wanted to say that the photographer said she gives them candy and then takes it away to make them cry |

If you'd read the article, you'd have seen that SHE says she made them cry. |

The children I photographed were not harmed in any way. And, as a mother, I am quite aware of how easily toddlers can cry. Storms of grief sweep across their features without warning; a joyful smile can dissolve into a grimace of despair. The first little boy I shot, Liam, suddenly became hysterically upset. a direct quote from the photographer herself ... please show me where she says she MADE them cry

even if she did make them cry, it's not like she beat them! people need to learn that kids cry and get hurt, and it's ok.
I mean seriously, if one kid out of a million kids hurts themselves on a swing, or gravel in a park, or some kid choked themself with a toy, then they ban it for everyone else. to me, that's just natural selection or a huge freak accident, we had swings and slides and played dodgeball as kids, and I don't know any kid who died.
you can't just put people in bubblewrap for the rest of their lives, what happens when it comes time for them to learn how to live?
just saying that it is ok for kids to cry, especially if they are crying over candy, that just says spoiled brat to me.
Edit to add: ok that was harsh, I'm not a horrible person, really, I just think people get too worked up over stuff like this.

That's not the same press release that was there earlier. Note this thread started April 18 and that's dated April 28. After reading it once I didn't go back to check if it had been changed, sorry. You're right, it doesn't say anything about that.... NOW. |

and is it no surprise that she makes children cry just to get a photo? I remembered seeing this thread and wondering about her motivations. And now I look at her comments in this article and wonder about her level of professionalism. |

Gee this woman sounds like an artist to me, and a successful one at that. Aren't artists supposed to take a different view of the world, to force us to examine our preconceived notions about the world around us? I guess i just don't get all the drama over this. My kids certainly would not have been traumatized by anything here as they are upset about just about everything that happens so this would just be one more thing to scream about(3 year olds LOVE to scream about stuff).

| There's no doubt that she is successful - look at the jobs she has gotten. I think I saw some photos that she did in TIME of one of the Olympic athletes. And then she got this one-on-one with McCain. I read the comments she made and am surprised with her glee at trying to make a not so flattering photo. To make these comments publicly like this just seems very unprofessional to me. |

I haven't done enough (read "any") research on this person to know what she's like, but artists can be dicks. That's one of the first things you learn in Art History (I know because all I learned was the first things).

I take exception to that comment "3 year olds LOVE to scream about stuff".
That's a broad, sweeping, and in my experience, untrue statement, and at best, a rationale.
It's one thing to have an arrangement with a model to achieve an end result for your image.
It takes a special kind of soulless selfishness to play indiscriminately with the feelings of small children who couldn't possibly understand.

| I just finished photographing 340 preschoolers in 4 days. Kids cry all the time. Its not a big deal. I particularly like some of the crying shots. |

The connection is that they say it is unethical and illegal to turn down business based on your religious beliefs. I just wonder if the same people will condemn Jill Greenberg for deliberately attempting to make McCain look bad (like that takes a lot of work heh heh) based on her political beliefs. |

Well, yeah it is a big deal......most decent, compassionate people don't seem to want to make, or see little kids cry.
If you do, I think you'll find yourself in a minority.

Considering how this woman treats kids, what she did to McCain is not a surprise. I am a bit surprised that she actually put those shots on her site and are the first ones you see.
