Ok, my boyfriend's business license is up for renewal (currently named David Brimm Photography), and he's convinced me to go into business with him.

So we are trying to think of a business name that is simple and all-inclusive. (he currently does fine art, stock, portraits, wedding, etc.) We also want something that we can stick with for the long run, especially if someday we decide to open a studio shop downtown, or something like that.

Any ideas would be appreciated, thank you, Amanda

(PS: We've thought of doing initials, but I think that B&H would not hesitate to sue us, lol!)

If we cannot think of something, we will just stick with Brimm Photography, it's just that I want to feel a little more like it really is partially my business as well

edit spelling

How about Brimm & Hobson - Photographers. Sounds classic, to me. Or Hobson & Brimm if y'all prefere.

Given he already has something going, I would second Brimm & Hobson. It keeps the existing clients linked and shows expansion. Works for me, but check if the url is available first.

Ok, that would probably work well. I just have a stigma in my head with my name, lol... guess it's time to get over it. Thank you for the suggestion, I will keep it in mind.

Or....

Brimm and 'Son Photography

;)

This allows for expansion after you have children.

ok, I'm not sure how things work in the USofA (nor the UK for that matter) however I think (and if it doesn't cost too much) David Should renew his business name, you should also have a Brimm & Hobson - Photographers presence and a David and Amanda presence. I'm not speaking from experience but firmly believe a business name can attract a certain type of clientele (surnames show stability/maturity and christian names show modern/streetwise).

also think longterm....where is your relationship going....will you be hopson forever? or will you want to change the business name again in the future?

Some would say: number one rule, "don't do business with friends."

When you become his wife, maybe... ;-)

We thought of this and then decided it wouldn't go over well as the majority of our potential client base is probably religious.

We've had businesses together before and we work quite well together, we think the same way but at the same time have opposite viewpoints, experience and ideas that seem to complement each other well.

I don't want my name in the business (because *shhh* if he doesn't read this, maybe someday it will be the same name) and like I said, I guess I'm like a lot of people who just don't like their name or feel it has any ring to it (not to mention, I've always hated who it came from).

What do you guys think of any of the following? too cuties perhaps? or too generic, bland?

We started by thinking maybe Lifetime Photography, but then there's that TV network and it's really bland and overused as a business name.

so maybe:

Lifeshots Photography

Shutterworks Photography

or maybe a name with the word Premier in it. Something Premier Photography...

(some of the sappy words we've been rolling around are: reflections, allure(ing), exquisite, illustrious, imaging, design, innovative, aspirations, captivating, elegant, charming, etc.)
and we already have a Creative Imaging Studios in town.

Thanks for all the input!

This is probably in the "too cute" category, but it's both accurate and punny: Brimm's Photo Tales

But really, if the business is established long enough that you're renewing, I'd keep the same name active, and then maybe take out a second name to cover additional activities, maybe a generic like HB Productions or something ... that one can cover all kinds of "activities" ... : )

hmm... I think I am leaning toward Shutterworks, even though there are a million of those out there... but hmmm.. the URL is already taken of course, I guess it is the female in me that wants something more "fancy" than our names.

Maybe we could just do Amanda and David Brimm Photography, and let people assume that we meant that Brimm was my name too

or
Shutterworks Photography
Amanda and David Brimm

who knows.

From a practical standpoint, people are creatures of habit and do not like change. So before changing anything that might create small ripples in an established pond I would ask is it worth the expense, headache, stress and upheaval to change the name, along with all marketing, web sites etc.? If the answer is yes, or who cares, we want to change it anyway, then I would elect for a change that presents minimal changes in your marketing and what not. Most of the time business names have little impact and are a sideline to the "true name" represented by the work itself and the skill at maintaining good customer relations. My 2c from zilch experience in that field, but a bit of life experience.

Thanks for the input... the background here is that he's never done much or any advertising or online stuff besides his business cards and email address, his client base is a small one of friends and family and thier co-workers, so there isn't really a business recognition.

We are trying to think of a name, and one that we would stick to long term, because we want to get out there and start really pushing this to be a viable business. Before, for him, it wasn't really so much of a business as a sort of hobby, or a practice business if you will-- don't get me wrong, don't want to offend him, it is a business that he treats as such, but he never really pursued it or put more effort into it than word of mouth and such.... kind of a backburner sort of thing, to his other businesses, we're looking to dive right into it and make it the main one

yeah, that was my first idea, and out the window it went... don't have the money to fight a losing law suit, although, might get some media attention, unless they squashed us before it could even get that far... lol

I think anything like ''Brimm and Hopson" sounds like a law firm.
