Okay, this will be the final installment (yeah right), in my camera arsenal.

I am looking at this one, quite pricey, but would like to hear opinions on whether or not it's decent.

Tripod Legs

And this for the head... heard it was pretty cool.

Tripod Head

If there are any alternatives that someone could recommend... i'm all ears!

Just before you buy, I recently bought a light weight but sturdy Manfrotto, the first time I used in the clasps on the the legs fractured. I took it back and replaced it and the same thing happened. I was a little disappointed as Manfrotto have an excellent reputation, But I upgraded to another Manfrotto which had screw release clasps and this has been great.
So the short answer is buy a tripod that has twist release rather than a clip.

Doesnt twist release take much longer to setup though?

Or do you get used to it?

I have a Manfrotto with the clips and have never had a problem.

I have another tripod with the twist type and it is such a pain. If you do go that way make sure you have something like WD-40 with you so you can actually get them to work.

Used this set up until recently. It worked well for alot of things.

I replaced the ball head with one from Markins. The reason I switched is that The Manfrotto did not perform well with my heavier lens. The 70-200 was too heavy. In addition, you will not be able to shoot panaramics easily. There is not a seperate panaramic base.

I used to have that head... it works fine unless you are using a battery grip and mounting a 70-200 lens on the collar. The battery grip gets in the way of the head grip.

I'm using the 190MF and 222 head, very very happy with this setup, gives me a lot of flexability.

One tip though, once you get your tripod, take the plastic dots off the tripod legs, and superglue them back on. They are way too loose on all Manfrotto tripods I've owned.

Cheers,
Terje

I just noticed the feet on that thing...weird mine has jointed feet so they adjust to what they are sitting on and are really steady. I don't know if I'd ever paid attention to that before. I also like the fact that mine has a hook on the bottom to help weigh it down if necessary.

As far as the clips verses screw things...I haven't ever had a problem with my clips either, might have been a bad batch or something, I sure like the ease of the clips though...lefty loosy righty tighty is just too difficult for me lol.

The 055 Pro (aka 3021 Pro - I believe) is an exceptional set of legs.

The Head I have settled on is the 488RC2. It is my 4th Manfrotto head and the one I will continue to use until I choose to spend more money on a heavier duty "Prograde" ball head. The 488RC2 is stable, user friendly, and securely locks the RC (rapid connect) plates in place. It is a bit light for a Large Tele Zoom like a Sigma 50-500. However, for all other lens/body combinations (which is most of my shooting), it is very good.

FYI re the clasps/clips:

I struggled with mine at first, they were so hard to undo.
Eventually I had one of my brighter moments and figured out that they were easily adjustable.

Perhaps bene07's broke because they were too tight ???? Just guessing...
