Just because it's not a holiday in the rest of the world doesn't mean they are being snooty. So what if people can't enter every challenge? It's just one of those things that happens. Sometimes you can enter, sometimes you can't. This isn't a democracy...it's a website that offers a members challenge and an open challenge every week. Any other challenge offered above those is just cake. Why be all angry because there aren't fireworks in your neck of the woods today? All this griping is a surefire way to make sure no one ANYWHERE gets a speed challenge for a long while, I'm sure. |
Heck there's millions of people in the US who won't see fireworks either. They could be working, in prison, camping in the moutains or just lucky enough to live in some small country town. Heck pour some gasoline on the ground and throw a match at it. Like others have said, fireworks can mean a lot of things. Thanks Lauriel for reminding us to stop complaining about everything. Heck, maybe we'll have a challenge that is something like "man-made but not made in America" then the Yanks can complain. OR something like "summer fun" in July ... heck again in Australia it's winter time. Gas and matches .. great fireworks ;)

LOL you absolutely correct. So make it"manmade but not sold in America" Then a few world travellers can compete but most Yanks will be left out. Or better yet, lets all vote on each challenge before it's official so we can all agree that it is valid.... oh wait we already do that ... If you don't like it ya don't enter anything. Hummmm three challenges a week not enough???? Ooooops yup it's more fun to complain. Thanks SC's for putting up with it ;)

Fireworks Thread
This isn't about the challenge but how to shoot them.

I'll echo what has been said about the west coast people. Most firework show start at 9:00PM PST :(
No worries though. Plenty of challenges to do this summer.

First off - Who said anything about it being limited to the type of fireworks that are involved in 1st or 4th of July type celebrations? Fireworks has many meanings.
Second - I'm glad it will be limited because I get darn tired of fireworks shots every year, almost as much as many of you get tired of Flowers! LOL.
OK, now I'm off thinking this is no big deal.

Doh, and I just got a few good shots tonight. I was going to post one for individual picture discussion for "what might have been" my straight from the camera submission. I'm sure my neighbors will be launching more tomorrow. |

so assuming this challenge is inspired by the 4th of july and it's fireworks displays, why make the deadline the same night? i'm on the west coast so the deadline for me is 9pm (midnight server time) which is right around the time the fireworks start around here..... nice one. |

I guess, July 1 - Canada Day wasn't big enough holiday to include us in this challenge, right?
I would get personally booed from my back yard if I started to shoot fireworks on July 4th.
So happy Independence Day to you and this USA challenge. |
But how do you "really" feel about it? |

dammit, if we won the war it would be fire works in the uk for a "we kicked arse" day. this would mean we get fireworks in the summer instead of bloody november in the pissing rain for some guy, called guy. i also propose (to fully embrace this global community which we are) that there should be a tricolor / french-themed speed challenge for bastille day, whch is in just 10 days time... |

And some of us will attend San Diego's biggest and best display at the Del Mar Fair, but won't make it home in time, nor can edit on his crummy PC at home. Oh well. |

I admire this attitude. "It might suck, but oh well." Especially since, as others have said, it is an additional (speed) challenge. I'm sure that there was consideration as to how this would be hard for a lot of people, and so it shouldn't be a main challenge. |

Here in Hawaii - U.S. soil too - midnight EST will be 6:00PM here. But no problem...I'll take a photo of our fireworks several hours later and figure out how to include it in the "No. 10" challenge. ...maybe 10 sparklers at one time, or 10 boxes of homemade fireworks, etc.
The only other thing to do would be to set my lei on fire at 3 in the afternoon, call it a firework, and get it on line by six. So if you see a picture of a lei on fire...vote it a 10 for originality.
Hang loose.

Or some Aussie ones...how about Vegemite, Koalas, Kangaroos, Galahs and Emus.
I am sure we have a few Galahs amongst us...and Leroy could certainly have fun with the vegemite. |

So does this mean you're going to cancel the 4th of July to make it fair for everyone? - Come on SC, you can do it! |
