Looking at Idnic's and Maestro's views/votes ratio, I wonder why mine is slow. |
Bummer. Beats my hand and everything else to! :) |

You know, maybe I'll stop dancing with you. As soon as we do, my score seems to come over like a vampire and suck the points right out of you.

My votes have been weird, too - here are the last 7 votes 8-9-4-8-6-1-8. It seems to follow a pattern - two good votes and one low one.
At least it's still hanging on to just above 6.

ok, so how do you know what your last 7 votes were? Is there a way see the individual votes on a entry? |

Well, some people use computer programs but I just use a simple arthimetic method.
You can only find out the exact vote that was given if only one vote has been given since the last time you wrote it down. For example (this is from a previous challenge):
At 221 votes the score is 5.6154
221 x 5.6154 = 1241
At 222 votes the score is 5.6126
222 x 5.6126 = 1246
The number of the vote given is the difference of the two:
1246 - 1241 = 5
So, A score of 5 was given.
Lots of times, you have to round the number up a bit to get the vote x score number. The auctual number you get when you multiply 222x5.6126 is 1245.9972 - you round it up to 1246.
If more than one vote has passed since you wrote it down you have to divide the difference by the number of votes to get an average of the votes given.
For example:
at 255 votes the score is 5.6392
255 x 5.6392 = 1438
at 257 votes the score is 5.6381
257 x 5.6381 = 1449
Subtract the totals:
1449 - 1438 = 11
Two votes were given that equal 11 - so, most likely with the score this picture has been getting the votes are a 5 & 6.
If two votes added up to 11 on a picture that was scoring in the high 6's or 7's you would porbably figure it was an 8 and a 3 or even a 9 and 2.
This sounds long and complicated but it's really super simple when you get in the habit of doing it. Usually, I write my scores down each time I check them and then if you see a sudden drop or rise you can multiply things out and figure out what vote you received.

Thanks. I thought it must be something like that. I too have been computing my votes by that method, I just thought that there might be an option on the system that I didn't see.

The trouble with dictionaries is, like super-good/expensive cameras, you have to know how to use them. OK, most of us know how to look up a word and read what's given as the 'definition'. I put inverted commas around 'definition' because I believe that English dictionaries, strictly speaking, give a guide to the common usage of words rather than defining them. I can go on and on, as indeed I am doing, partly because I have taught languages and seen students who were allowed to have dictionaries with them in the exams, waste a lot of time browsing around etc.
Perspective as given in the link above, gives four usages, three of which are visual/pictorial and one of which the dictionary itself denotes as 'mental'. If I ask: "What sort of perspective do you have on this question?", then I am using the 'mental' connotation. If I say: "Draw/make me a picture with the emphasis on perspective.", well, obviously it's the visual aspect that I'm addressing.
A dictionary does not, of itself, seal the bond. I'm not (intentionally) whining though, because I recognise that photography often has a significant literary element which can justify the 'mental' usage. IMO, or to my evaluation, it gives the picture some work to do, but work done is always good to look at. |
