Can anyone recommend a website (or tell me, if you've got the time to type) where I can look up the basic differences of different types of lenses? For example, what do the different lengths mean (i.e. 18-55 mm vs. 50-200 mm) and how do they relate to the types of photos you want to take (i.e. portraits, landscape, etc.)? And what the different types of lenses do (i.e. macro, fisheye, etc.)? Oh, and which company brand of lenses do you prefer? I've heard the coined term "bad glass", "cheap glass", etc. floating around and can't make out whether people are referring to a bad lens or a bad lens company. =o) |

Very basic (and someone else is probably posting something better while I'm typing this) but you'll generally want a wider angle lens for landscapes (18+), a midrange for portraits (50-150, depending on your studio size) and longer range for wildlife, sneaky candids, etc.
Here's a site that I just pulled up in a google search that might help: //www.all-things-photography.com/camera-lenses.html
I'd also recommend taking a look through the galleries here and making note of which lenses were used for which shots.

Thanks for the help. =0) That link is a good knowledge basis for me since I'm new to DSLRs. |
