Anyone here shot one of these?
Its the Mexican tradition of throwing a HUGE party for a young woman when she turns 15. The size of the party is very much like a bar/bat mitzvah and the clothing and photography is much like shooting a wedding.
Anyway, I know these things because the mother of a soon-to-be 15-year old called today and wants to know if I will shoot this event for her. I was flattered that she called and so immediately hit the web to find out as much as I can about these events and photography associated with them. Best I can tell the actuall event will be no different than shooting a wedding.... a few formal poses, a big reception/party then an album.
Here is just one of the 50ish websites I've looked at today to get info on this... any advice would be greatly appreciated.
A few Quince images

You mean Quinceanera? :-)
I guess it is Quince Años too. I have just always heard Quinceanera.
The only tip I have is to eat! The food is always amazing!

Have you ever watched, "My Super Sweet Sixteen" on MTv? Sometimes they have Quincenaneras on. Of course, they spend $250,000 on those parties..LOL
Anyways, good luck with the gig!

yeah cindi. think of it as almost a wedding event. it's basically "coming of age". in the philippines, we have the same event for girls turning 18. it's called a "kotilyon" or cotillion or debutant parties.
typically the celebrant is dressed in a really nice gown or dress with her proud parents by her side.
i would definitely treat this as almost a wedding shoot in terms of poses and such. |

I had one of those parties, many years ago. It's not just a mexican tradition, it's a hispanic tradition in general.

I like one of the shots that has all the guys lined up each holding a rose out toward the camera |

Bhat Mitzva is very similar, but often the Quice will be even a bit more extravagant...
Shoot it like any formal event. There will probably be a coregraphed dance at the reception, its size and grandeur will vary based on the nationality of the family.
They very well might want more "situational portraits" where the girl is out and about (park, beach, etc) because this is the girl's passage into woman... it's their last chance to get pictures of their baby. Think of this as an engagement session. :)
In the end it's a big party with big album sales potential :0

Hey i shots my sister's Quinceanera pictures in that same place that the website shows. Is called Viscalla, and it used to be some rich guy's house but now it belongs to dade county and they rent it for special occasions like weddings and things like that. We had to around $100 to go in and shot the pictures. I can post some of them if you want. |

Mexican guy here :) you will have some fun shooting this event, good luck.
Do not worry, it is just a formal event. Prepare as if you were shooting a wedding. The Parents just want their daughter to look like a princess, and daughters just want to look like women. :P
I could go and help you if you want ;) only problem is now I am trapped in UK :'(
