I am very much an amateur, but I love taking pictures. Here is my first attempt at B/W photography. I would love some critiques. I really want to get better at this.

Please post thumbnails instead of large images... It makes it easier for people to look.
Tell us about your process. Is this film or digital and how did you make your conversions? What are your objectives?

Thanks! Fixed.. (New here .. sorry)
I took the pictures with a Nikon Coolpix 8700 (digital camera) in color and converted them to black and white with Photoshop. I am looking for some constructive criticism on my composition especially, but also technical aspects (tonal range, ect)
Thanks |

I think the second and third photos are my favorite. I think they have a pleasing black and white tone to them and I like the composition of those the best as well. My favorite is the second, where the child's face fills the whole frame.
The first photo, for me, doesn't really seem to be a good subject choice for a B&W photo. I suppose it depends on what you want to show, but for me B&W is a lot about texture and a lot about light....so subjects (such as people) that show these things off tend to work particularly well.
The last photo seems as though perhaps he was standing a bit in the shadows, so there doesn't appear to be the same range of highlights and shadows as the 2nd and 3rd pics.

Thank you very much. The second one is my favorite as well. The last one I like but it was shot in the shadows, and he was really ready to go home! It was like 102 degrees outside *L* |

Oh goodness, I know what you mean about the heat!! It's been awful here as well....can certainly understand him wanting to stand in the shade and go home :-) You've got a great little model there for your pictures though! He's got such a cute face and is very expressive with it! |

I have a great picture (but not well composed) of him making this god awful growly face. He is definately a ham for the photos! |
