Hold on... "no editting a loud"? |

lol
I think the spirit (maybe?) of the suggestion is to focus a particular challenge on the the shooting technique by removing the option of post processing. It's not necessarily a knock against post processing, just another "challenge": how good are your shots straight off the ccd. In that spirit, judging might be directed at composition, framing (as in how you framed you shot, not borders), lighting - how good of an eye do you have for the shot, and how well you can capture that with just your camera. In that spirit, I would even suggest no cropping. Submit your shot straight from the camera. Someone mentioned processing that can be done while converting from raw to jpeg - I don't know if or how this could be verified.
To even the playing field, if it's possible to "police", it might even be interesting to limit certain high-end features on some cameras, assuming that the use of these features are recorded in the exif data. Here I'm getting into no-man's land for me. I'm not sure exactly what features might be appropriate to limit, or whether their use can be checked. Just a thought. |

Well the only DSLR that I know if that can't shoot in jpg more is the Sigma SD9. I know I have seen at least one user here who has one. Aside from the SD9 users I everyone else can shoot in jpg.

True enough, and the shooting mode is in the EXIF if we think we need to check - it could be fun |

how about making it just a point & shoot challenge...no in-camera adjustments allowed other than focusing and no post processing other than resizing? |
My 'lower-end' Canon A40 can do all sorts of funky things with colours (Vivid/B&W/Sepia) that my 602 can't!
As for the "rules" I would argue that if you're going to disallow post-processing you have to disallow cropping too. |

Hmmm, you can probably do well with a high end camera with in camera processing, you just have to play with it. This usually means for the 10D that i need to sharpen with +1 and maybe +1 for saturation, as teh saturation for 10D is less than D30....

So I'm hearing in this thread that high end cameras would be at a disadvantage because post-processing is almost required.
I'm also hearing low-end cameras would be at a disadvantage because they require post-processing. By the way, the Olympus D-460z has about the same in camera adjustments as the Canon D60 has, with sharpness controls, exposure compensation and white balance (no contrast/ saturation)
So it's a universally unfair challenge, or is it just fair on the people that haven't downloaded decent postprocessing tools (which can be had for free) and learned how to use them ?
Post-processing is part of digital and film photography - maybe we should run classes or something... |

There is alot to be said in what makes a good picture, remember a picture says a thousand words, composition, subject, angle, color, purpose, who, what and where. I have photoshop, but I hate to use it myself, I feel I have already failed at my objective if I have to. Making a good picture for other's to enjoy is what I want. I think this would be a great Idea, maybe one of the hardest, being you can't make a o.k picture good with P.S work. A good challenge for all camera's, and alot more picture's in the trash-bin. |
