The Pentax K1000 was my first camera. I loved it. Solid as a brick. A great learning tool, too, since it is fully manual. |

The K1000 is all manual. As film cameras go it is all you need for most photography (imo) :)
It will teach you DOF/shutter speed and make you select the correct combo of the two - these two variable comprise the whole of exposure, and except for composition are the most important aspects of photography (without getting into lighting and friends).
Having started out learning only manual I find it strange (for lack of a better word) going into any of the auto modes :\ -but- I know what the camera is doing, and that's important.

I know nothing about it except that every time someone says those magical words, guys who were photographers when film was still king start salivating and get all misty-eyed as if reflecting upon a legend.
One of my photog friends said that it was 50% of his life's plan when he graduated college. Save up, get a K1000 and travel the world.
It's probably at least fairly decent. ;) |

Still have mine, too. Love it. Time to get it out again.
I shot a black and white cd cover for a friend using my pentax.
Actually, I shot digital and film and let them choose from the proofs...oops...not a good testimonial for a digital site. ;) |

If you have an interest in working with infrared film, the K1000 with a #25 red filter is a great camera for that. |

I got my K1000 for my 18th birthday - 27 years ago. I still have it and use it periodically. Solid as a rock, and weighs about the same as one. |

During my first year as a sixth grade teacher (which was also my first year as a married man [1986]...my wife & I celebrated 20 yrs. just yesterday [August 1st],) I picked up a Pentax K-1000 at a pawn shop in Tallahassee, Florida for $75.00.
The K-1000 remains my standard of excellence to this very day. With the slow progress I am having becoming an excellent digital photographer, I am very close to using the K-1000 (or one of my other Pentax film cameras) and having my local high-quality photo processor scan the roll straight to cd-rom.
With film being comparable to 10 Megapixels, it seems the logical thing to do until I can replace my Minolta DiMage 7i for a digital camera of higher resolution.
Anyone out there who knows how to increase clarity on a 5 MegaPixel may post or send me a Private Message...(whatever works for you) I am pretty open to just about any info. I can get a this point. Thanks! :)

K1000! That brings back memories. It's the first camera my husband got me not too long after we were married (we're now married 30 years). Solid camera, took it everywhere, haven't used it in a couple years, wow. Loved that camera. |

That's the camera we have to use for class at college and it sure is pretty nice. It'd make a nice weapon too if I were ever attacked on my late night photography adventures....that thing's like a brick!! ;) |

Wow...interesting seeing all of the praise for this camera. My father and uncle both have models from the 70s (their college days), and about 15 years ago i had saved up all of my pennies to buy the exact same cam. Never having been that involved w/ photography, I wasn't aware how highly regarded this camera was. It's been in its case under my bed for the past few years, as digital replaced the need to buy and pay for all of the film and developing. This thread makes me want to break out the cam and start using it again! |

So cool to see so many K1000 users still around remembering it. I grew up on it and kept it until I found an ME Super on sale. I still have both and use my old manual lenses on my istDL.
I actually bought my Pentax ist because I already had lenses and I have such high regard for Pentax.

i found my father's in law forgoten K1000 in a closet some2 or 3 years ago... he has bought it somewhere in the late 80s and used it only for 2-3 films.
i immediately loved this camera and bought some primes for her from ebay.
I'm using her very often.

Thanks again for starting this thread. I was so inspired to return my photographic roots that I shot a whole roll of 24 prints while on vacation at Epworth-By-The-Sea, St. Simons Island, Georgia a couple weeks ago while we celebrated our 20th Wedding Anniversary. I plan to set up a folder in my portfolio today, labelled "Pentax K-1000." You can't miss it.
Please advise the Site Council, especially somebody who knows one personally, to offer us some Challenges dedicated to digitized film for the purists among us who believe that silver halide crystals will always be the photographic artist's medium of choice...at least this photographic artist for sure. :)
