Where can I get the firmware hack for the 300D?
I tryed here
Link
And Downloaded ......
E3kr111B71.rar
I do as it says and when i put the CF card into the slot, turn it on, nothing happens.
Anyone have any suggestions?

You probably have to unzip the file first before uploaded to the card. Just make sure that you have plenty of batteries in your camera or have it plugged in. If you are in the middle of changing firmware and the power goes out your camera may be unuseable.

upgrading any devices firmware is risky.. if its not gonna fix something drastic, don't do it... just my opinion though

The modified firmware allows you to change some of the Custom Function settings which became available. The Flash exposure compensation is available now by pressing SET button during the shooting if CF01 is set to 2

CF 01: SET button func. when shooting
0: Default (no function).
1: Change quality.
You can select the recording quality directly.
2: Change parameters.
Works as FEC (Flash Exposure Conpensation)
3: Menu display.
Provides the same function as the MENU button.
4: Image replay.
Provides the same function as the PLAY button.

CF 02: Shutter release w/o CF card
0: Possible without CF card
1: Not possible
The shutter release will not work if there is no CF card in the camera, so it prevents you from forgetting to load a CF card. If there is no CF card and you press the shutter button, no CF will blink on the LCD panel and in the viewfinder.

CF 03: Flash sync speed in Av mode
0: Auto
1: 1/200sec (fixed)
For flash shot in the aperture-priority AE mode (Av), the shutter speed will be locked at 1/200 sec. This prevents a slow shutter speed from being set in very dark conditions.

CF 08: RAW+JPEG rec.
Sets the recording quality of the JPEG image recorded simultaneously and embedded in the RAW image file.
0:RAW+Small Normal
1:RAW+Small Fine
2:RAW+Medium Normal
3:RAW+Medium Fine
4:RAW+Large Normal
5:RAW+Large Fine

I would stick with official Canon firmware, but lot's of people have had luck with non-offical ones.

I had the wasia hack over a year ago when i still had my 300D, and it worked quite well for a software upgrade.

I've been using it for over 2 years with no problems at all

I love the fact that I have the hack on my camera. Besides flash exposure compensation... I truly appreciate the option of rear shutter sync.

I haven't had any problems with the hack. It is well done.

Oh, and as far as the OP goes... get WinRAR (for Windows) or some other archiver that can read RAR files and extract the files, then put them on your cam.

I can't live without the mirror lockup... Though it really sucks when I forget to turn it off... :-P

There is no way to unzip the file.
It is a .rar file, whatever that is.
Thanks for the tip on making sure my batt is fully charged.
But i still have no luck with the update.
Just isnt recognizing the file or something.
I notice that the file from Canon is a .FIR file.

What kind of system are your running?

You can get WinRAR here for several different machines...I've used the Windows version but can't vouch for the others.

the .rar is just another type of compression--

EDIT
