their headquarters is here in richmond, and they are seen as a pretty decent place to work. however, a lot of job satisfaction/security depends on what type of work you are doing. they are under intense competitive pressure from best buys, which means they are constantly tweaking things to try to keep an edge--and that, in turn, creates challenges for the employees. however, like any place else, if you go in looking for a job where you can punch the clock for 40 hrs a week, it will be a job. on the other hand, if you treat it like an opportunity to get started, there is no limit as to how far you can go with it.

good luck!

Don't know if this will help you or not, but from a geek (ie me) - I find the staff at Circuit City is far more helpful and knowledgeable than the staff at Best Buy. I realize that's a generalization, but if I have a choice, I go to Circuit City first. Good luck!

Well, good luck, Buzz. I hope that all goes well.

In regards to Circuit City, I, too, like them more than Best Buy (in my experience, the sales staff at CC has a more stand-offish approach, and at BB I can't get in the door without someone asking if I need help). My advice - be it for CC or otherwise: if a customer asks if you have something, and you don't know, don't lie and say that you don't carry it. This happened to me twice at a CC, and after looking for a few minutes, I would find the item, and then point it out to the ever-so-sure sales associate. If you don't know, help them look, or ask someone else. At least that way, the customer feels helped out, and they may seek you out on a return trip. If you get really lucky, they might buy you a camera or a flat panel TV, but I wouldn't get my hopes up for that.

Can't give ya any inside tips, but for the interview, relax, yet be entusiastic, and smile. But not like a grinning idiot or anything like that :-)

Good luck man, I am sure you will do fine.

Thanks everyone who wished me luck--

My interview went good, I interviewed with the operations manager, I got scheduled my 2nd interviw with the store manager this Thursday.

I have over five years of sales experience, so I think my chances are good.

2nd interviews usually do mean a good thing. Good luck.

I work at Circuit City, currently, it kinda sucks, but I guess it could be worse. Pay sucks, managers aren't that great too. Tell them you know about computers, and you're interested in helping customers and providing great customer service to every person that walks through the door.

of course, circuit city sucks to you, damien--you're only doing it as a job until you start law school ;-)

however, there are plenty of people making decent money and enjoying their work at cc. and, there are plenty of people who have used their first crack at cc to be a stepping stone to better jobs. it's all in how you approach it and where you want to go...it doesn't matter where you are, you are the only one who can set your limits.

To be honest if you have sales experience I would try a cell phone company. If there is an ALLTEL or Verizon there the money would be better. For instance at ALLTEL you can be a commisiond sales rep and make at least $9.52 per hour plus commission. I have several reps that make over $30,000 and many that make over $40,000. The work is pretty structured but is a good company to work for.

As for CC I think you will be happy if you have a good attitude. having managed a best buy, most of my employees loved thier work because they thought about the positives not the negatives.

No, I don't need the $89 surge protector and $40 USB cable to go with my $99 printer :P

but the 40 dollar cable has 24K gold plated connectors and you need that to make your print all the better. haha, so funny. you can buy a 9 dollar usb card reader that comes with the exact same cable and just throw away the reader if you want, and you have a nine dollar cable

and also skiprow, I would like my job a whole lot more if I were making decent money. But at my circuit city its just a place where a lot of kids work while they are in college. SO it's basically a perfect environment for me right now. I would venture to speculate the median age of our store is 24. I don't want to sound negative, I was the perfect job for me in my last two years of college. I made some really great friends and there were some days that I actually had a good time working. But also selling computers and cameras to angry Russian or Brazilian or Vietnamese customers who really don't speak any English can be extremely frustrating. The store is the closest electronic store to the immigration neighborhoods in an immigration city. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with that, but it can wear on your patience.

Have someone set up a blind test for you some time: cheap speaker wire vs Monster cable. You might be convinced to save some major $$ over the next few years.

I used to work there back when you had to wear CC provided sports jackets (still have them I think). Some of the guys were making $50's others teens because it was pure commision so the dirtiest player tended to make the most money.

True story. We would go around to each tv set in the morning to find out which sets had the best "spiff"(best commision) that day. Then we would turn the color all weird on all the other sets except those that we wanted to sell. And then those were the best televisions in the world until they changed the spiff again, and a diffrent batch of sets were the best sets in the world.

I made my money hover and capturing every person that wanted speakers. They had the highest commision rate, and were generally left alone by the other sharks in the store.

Bottom line was that Best Buy was killing them so they decided to opt for less pay, and to drop the sports jackets.

Selling electronics is fun, and you should definitly stress that you know everything about every dept(even if you don't). Get to know the man. reps real well if you want some good deals and freebees. I got a Home Theater from JBL for 90% off because I a JBL rep was in plain close and I was talking so highly of them that they gave me a coupon where I paid very little for any product they carried that I wanted.

Good Luck.

I agree monster cables worth the money but only if your hooking up quality on both ends. I run Klipsch reference on a kenwood AV center. with dvd audio. love the sound tried the cheap way with plain old wires major difference in sound quality.
