How would I go about being a photographer for a small paper as a part time thing? There is a local paper here that is just for a small town/area in a large city. They report on the most local stories, nothing major, nothing nationwide or even statewide. How would I go about submitting images to them or being a part time staffer there just for fun? Possibly getting some assignments...I don't even care if I'm paid more than minimum wage. Is this possible? Whats the deal here?

I'm guessing skiprow will show up in this thread soon but if not you should get in touch with him.

Most small papers will accept per piece work for football games and school functions. They dont pay much but its a start. Also the local chamber of commerce meetings usualyl have people from that paper show up so you could try and find them there. Or just walk in and ask?

Im debating a part time job like that for our local. Invloced photography and some design. Its peanuts but its good experience.

Best thing is to go down and chat with the editor. Bring some examples of your work. Chit chat and see what can be done.

Freelance will be your friend in the beginning.

Good luck!!

i'd say chat with the editor. or shoot an accident or local event, bring it in and ask if they want it or if they'd want something similar in the future.

you may not get more than $40-50 for the shot, but it's decent, and a start.

Walk-in and talk to the editor... take some samples and show him you have knowledge of the camera. Nothing too artsy.

I've both been hired as a photog and hired photogs this way.

Thanks for the responses...I'll see if I can schedule a time to meet with the editor.
