I got my Powershot S400 for about $220 off eBay and have no complaints about it; handles color and light great and is incredibly easy to use.

Well I have had fairly good results with my wee Fuji. I , too would get a Canon, now..but the Fuji I use is very cheap maybe $120-150Can.
I had pretty good luck with my little HP as well(cheaper still), and NO ONE ever talks about HP's here
So if price is an issue...

I'm biased (obviously) but I'm finding the A620 to be a versatile camera. Not the lightest or smallest point and shoot around, but loaded with features.

It runs off AA batteries, which is a real plus, and has a good range of presets so practically everyone in the family can use it easily.

The flip-out LCD is very handy, and the camera feels good in the hand.

We have the Canon A530 and it does a great job for point and shoot. The A620 should be fine.

What about the Kodak Z650?

My wife's Canon A75 bit the dust last week with one too many trips to the pavement and we're in the market also. :(

The Kodak has 10X Optical zoom plus most of the controls a typical to mid-level P&S user would need.

any and all of the canon powershot series cameras - they all get great reviews. I owned and/or used several of them - excellent cameras.

I like my camera quite a bit (Nikon Coolpix 5400). You can even buy lenses for it for around $100 extra, and it shoots in RAW with a free firmware upgrade.

Funny. We ended up with a Canon A620 after all (the OP's original suggestion). The Kodak was cooler (to me) with the glass that it has, but the deciding factor...the Canon fit my wife's purse better. ;^)

Bought my Canon SD500 for about that price (40 more) canon has some others in this price range. Could try an olympus stylus 720 (big screen and compact design but its a bit over budget also) and HP R717 is another

I was just faced with the task of selecting an appropriate point and shoot for my daughters up and coming world cruise. She needed a camera that was able to run off double A's (just so you can stand a chance of picking up spares if you get caught without) had a better than average level of zoom, and at least 4MP of resolution.

We looked at the super zooms, but they all fell short for one reason or another. First off, a 10-12x zoom is no bargain without image stabilization. Seriosuly, it's just hardly worth having one without it. And the image stabilization will drive the price way up. Plus, they all have lens caps and large front elements. Two factors that I'd rather she didn't have to fuss with.

Finally settled on the Panasonic DMC-LZ3

6x Optical zoom with Image Stabilization. Runs off double A's and has built lens cover. And they are one heck of deal at around $200 (and less on sale).

We looked at that one also and nearly purchased it, but not having a viewfinder (LCD only) was a major drawback for us. The IS and 6X is certainly a plus.

p.s. - Hope she enjoys her cruise!!! ;^)

We discussed that. Since she could not recall ever using the viewfinder with her previous digicam---this was a non issue. Also, with the 5MP LZ3, there is no sound in movie mode. Though its 6MP sibling (LZ5?) does have this feature. Fortunately, she does not use the movie mode much.

And, yes, she better enjoy that cruise! I cannot tell you how jealous her mother and I are.
