Dropped a bit since this AM.
Just had a quick look through the entries for the first time and there is some great work in this challenge!
Will vote and comment when I get a chance... |

Now you must all just stop voting on my image and I'll be happy :) |

I wish my photos were averaging that high, I seem to be lucky to break 4.5.
Meanwhile, I've voted on just over half the photos in this challenge now, and I reckon (though I can't be sure) that my average vote must be about 6, because the quality is massively high. It's going to be difficult (if not impossible) for me to pull out any clear winners. |

This is one of those "life experiences meant to keep oneself humble", isn't it?;)
You're right, I've been lurking long enough to see that there are some pretty tough critics on the site, and some extremely good competition. I'll be happy with what I get, though hope springs eternal.;) |

I need tips on voting for this challenge.
The instructions say that the silhouette should "appear solid and without much, if any detail". I've seen quite a bit of submissions where you can see the subject, plain as day. Am I right to give them a 3 or less?
Also, one of my pet peeves is a non-horizontal horizon. Granted, there are times (very few) where a photograph can get away with it, but (again) am I right in either voting low (3 or less) for a crooked horizon?
Just asking...
Thanks!

Vote however you feel, and everyone else will vote how they feel, and it will all work out in the end.
If people tell you what score you should and should not give out, then you're not voting for yourself.
If you think that a crooked horizon completely ruins a shot and makes it worth 3 points, then give 3 points. Edited to add - if you do do that, please comment and say that you have, otherwise it's not very fair.

Sad, very sad. For once I actually submitted a good picture.
Something is very wrong here tonight. This is NOT a sub-5 shot by any means. |
1 less image in the challenge now, one more in my porfolio.

You hit the nail on the head here. I have voted on over half as well and my average is around 6 or 7. Outstanding quality of photos in this challenge. I don't feel as bad about my 4.8 at this point due to the fact that there are so many great shots. Hell, I am having fun just looking at some of the pictures. Although I am envious about the locations you guys have to shoot. ROAD TRIP. |

Well, I suggest not voting solely on one particular aspect of an image, i.e if it's a great image that you might give an 8 but then dropping it to a 1 because it's slightly crooked... I try to vote on a using a scale and then coming up with my vote as a whole. One that I saw in another thread a few weeks ago seemed to line up fairly well with how my thinking goes as I vote:
0-2 meets challenge =
0-3 technical merit =
0-3 creativity =
0-2 biased wow factor =
Total =
So, I'd say decide your own scale in your head and then vote and comment accordingly?

I don't actually spend the time to rank each of those criteria for each image either, but those are the 4 basic things I think about as I'm voting and commenting:)

Let's say that it has excellent technical merit (3 points); it is very creative (3 points, total of 6); and the photo really floors me (2 points, total of 8). However, the photo in no way what-so-ever meets the challenge subject rules. Let's say the photo is of a dog and the challenge is for flowers. Would that mean they would get an 8? If so, then that "scale" method is flawed.
My suggestion to improve the scale method is to have a conditional. IF they meet the challenge subject rules, then use this scale:
0-3 technical merit
0-3 creativity
0-3 biased wow factor
That would give a maximum of 9, because we all know there is no such thing as a perfect 10.
However, if they do not meet the challenge, the scale would revert to:
0-1 technical merit
0-1 creativity
0-1 biased wow factor
for a maximum possible total of 3 (and that's generous, seeing that the photo really shouldn't have been submitted in the particular challenge!)
Just my $0.02 worth. Your thoughts? ...

I bet someone already noted it here but, I'm seeing a lot of images that seem to confuse "shadow" with "silhouette". |

It does look like lots of people have different ideas about what makes a silhouette. Of course I can only vote based on my idea. |
