Lol! well, ya know, voting isn't an exact science... no matter how much math is involved, everything about it is subjective, the scale is just meant to be an attempt at an ojective metric... There are always exceptions... Although I bet it is pretty rare that the exception you noted actually happens... but maybe:)

Whilst scales might be great to begin with I agree they should not be followed too tightly, I probably do the whole 'scale' thing in my head whilst viewing a shot before my score pops out. As long as you are consistent I don't think it matters how you vote.

I am half scale half intuitive. I have base scores for meeting the challenge vs. DNMC, 5 and 3 respectively, and then vote intuitively around those based on quality, creativity, and whether or not I just plain like it, but have no point values set around those.

Typically, an excellent photo that doesn't meet the challenge won't score higher than a 4, and a low quality photo that meets the challenge won't score lower than a 4.

8 is reserved for "wow" photos that I want to see in a second pass. In the second pass I bump the ones that stand out from the 8 field to 9, and then from the 9 field I'll bump personal favorites to 10. I will occasionally bump an 8 down to a 7, but not very often.

That's kinda what I do. Hypothectically speaking, I make a first pass and only give a high rating (let's say no more than 6) to those that I think deserve it. Then, I go back to all the sixes and "fine-tune" those. Many stay at 6, but some become 7. Some even become 8. A rare one may be bumped up to a 9 (being a newbie, I'm yet to do that).

Since many peoples are complaining about not knowing why they have a low score I decided to comment on every pictures that I scored below 5.

I just finish doing it, we'll see, I hope this will help people but if I get many bad PMs, I won't do it again.

My scores have been up and down all day (~ 5.54 to 5.84). Based on the comments I've been getting, I probably won't go anywhere. I already have 12 comments: 6 really like what I did (one even suggested ribbon!?!) and 6 think I ruined a great photo by not cropping a certain area of dark :( Sometimes, taking a risk doesn't pay off. I hope I learn something from this.

As you can see I voted on every picture, but I have to admit that in 2006 I changed my way of voting, to get a vote of 4 or below from me, your picture has to be really bad (IMO, sorry for those that I voted 4 and under). If you get a 5 from me, usually you have at least meet the challenge.
