I really can't understand this voting methodology. You're not the only person that I've seen in the forums say that they do this.

To me, it just defeats the entire point of the voting process if you only vote photos you like upwards.

By not voting on a photo you don't like, you are effectively giving it its average vote, which could be higher than you actually think it should have.

It's like saying that you're happy for an average or poor photo to win, and you'd rather that then "offend" the sensibilities of someone who a) entered the challenge knowing what to expect and b) won't know what vote you gave anyway.

I follow a similar voting strategy to NikonJeb in that if I just don't get the image, I leave it alone simply because my judgement of it would be skewed.

In the event that you feel the image does not meet the criteria of the challenge I think it should be reported to the Ops to make a judgement as to whether the image should be DQ'd and then you can rate the image in good faith.

This would allow the author to respond to such challenges rather than being slated with low scores which assumes guilt for what may well be a genuine misunderstanding. I think the author of the image should be able to put a short description accompanying the image that can be read by reviewers that may help.

I'm not suprised to be honest, I've not put the best entry in and it's so similar to 60% or more of the shots in the challenge

But that's what I don't understand. Your judgement is not skewed, it's readily apparent that you don't get the photo. In my opinion that's fairly plain - if I don't get it, then the photo has failed, not me. It'll get voted on accordingly.

Except that not meeting the challenge is not grounds for DQ.

If you don't get the photo, then it could be argued that the photographer didn't do his/her job well.

Likewise, if you don't vote on bad or DNMC photos, you're just opening the door for someone else to vote high and let them finish higher than they deserve.

Well I just logged on, hit update and got a 3. Last night after work EST, I got a group of 7 votes totalling 31 'points'...I was at 5.56. Oh well.

I'm glad I'm following karmabreeze in the thread because this topic is timely. Yesterday she posted that this image is going to be Kodak Picture of the Day. Yet we only voted her 63rd place. More people voted it 4,5 than voted 7,8,9,10.

High voters...low voters....it certainly is an interesting site....

This is something that has taken me a long time to learn. I really like some of my of lowest scoring pictures but I didn't connect with the voter.

I think the problem with low voting DNMC entries is that there is information available to the Ops that is not seen when voting. Such as how the shot was taken and why the author feels it meets the criteria.

I think flagging DNMC for an entry may be preferable, so that in the event of a genuine error a true valuation of the images merit can be made.

It is upsetting when time and effort is invested in making an image that meets the criteria and then gets low voted. I think a way of saying "Nice image but this wasn't what the contest is about" is a nicer way of handling it and those entries can be excluded from the ribbons.

To me a vote of 1 or 2 says "Thanks for turning up, now put the camera down before someone gets hurt". If that is a fair assessment of the image then OK, that vote allows you to have a base to work on but the abritrary nature of low-voting DNMC makes it difficult to determine where you stand relative to your peers and may do some people a disservice.

Anyway, I shall cease to harp on about it any further, promise :)

The OP has the all the information, yes, but again, if s/he didn't get their message across, then the photo has failed. How does entering a picture of a carrot in a race car challenge fit? It doesn't.

I agree, I don't hand out 1 and 2 votes liberally, and yes, it is upsetting when people don't get it, buu we're not necessarily here to play nice - there are plenty of other sites out there where you can post a snapshot of your dog and get oodles of praise just for showing up. We're here to learn and be critiqued. It's a tough lesson, but a valuable one.

I have one complaint

is just putting the number you voted considered a comment? That's just lame. I personally don't care what people vote, but I'd like to know WHY they vote what they do.

Like I'm going to mark a comment of "5" as helpful.

I've now voted on all the images. Maybe a few will shift around, but I've reviewed and I think they are in the right places. There's a whole shed load of 6+ images here though. Very nice set of photos.

Agree completely. Got the same comment, thought "well that doesn't help much..." Been lucky, though. Haven't gotten many comments yet, but the ones I've received have either been complimentary or constructive criticism that helps me better understand how others view the images I create. Both are good to have.:)

Still doing okay for a first-timer:

Would love to have broken 6 on the first time out the gate, but unless there's a rash of generous_voters, tapdancing leprechauns, or divine intervention, it doesn't look like it's going to happen.

*strews four-leaf clovers about the place* Heeeeeere, Lucky Lucky Lucky...

I got the "5" comment too... but at least it didnt say "1" without explanation!!! haha... that would have really ticked me off!!!

I personally tend to comment on ones below 5 or above 7... in the middle means it was just in the middle I guess... not much to say about it... I dont know... thats just me!!! Depends on the pic I guess!!
