This was posted in another thread to address the "5" comment issue. Just thought I would pass it along.

we get a number of these "comments" reported, which we have to clean up. it's also unfair to artificially inflate the number of "comments" you've made in the event we have other invitational challenges based on those statistics.
thank you!

IMHO, getting a comment that is simply a number is in no way helpful to me. It doesn't make me a better photographer. Seeing the average score is tons more helpful than a number for a comment.
So, if I get a 9 or 10 in a comment, but my average score is 3.2612, it helps me not. Same thing if I get a 2 for a comment, but my average is 3.1991, it really doesn't help.
To discourage numeric comments, simply just don't mark them as helpful, and, most importantly, do not write such comments.

Have you thought about talking to the commenter, especially if they have encouraged you to do so AFTER the challenge. Wouldn't that be better than having them vote a 4 and leave a comment that says...Nice lighting. They scored you a 4 but left you a somewhat vague but encouraging comment.
By knowing the vote of a person WILLING to give it to you and discuss it with more than 2 words AFTER the challenge, won't you develop a new photography contact AND have some meaningful dialogue.
IF, that is, you actually want more than 2 words of meaningless fluffery.

I got 2 other comments of meaningless jabber- I knew the issue and they only commented on ONE thing, nothing about the picture as a whole, artistry, lighting or anything like that.
I lump that and the number into the same category. If you're going to state the obvious then don't bother leaving a comment, and if you're leaving a number then leave a reason as to WHY you left that particular number. Especially if you're someone who has a history in photography, has an eye for it and does rather well. Always nice to get comments - in depth comments that is from people who actually KNOW what they are looking at. |

I would argue the fact that my number vote, combined with the fact you know it is me, combined with the fact I have a note on my profile explaining myself would be enough to help those that really want discourse.
Without having time to comment on 300 plus photos. Whose do you suggest I comment on? The lowest and highest scoring? The Middle ones? The first 30 or so I vote on? The last 30?
Faced with over 300 photos to vote on and comment on, isn't it better to encourage the pasionate ones who care about photography as much as me to talk to me about their photo IF THEY CARE? Versus arbitrary comments on photos pulled out of a hat? |

Commenting with a "4" and saying "Nice Lighting" is a cowardly gesture. IMO, the comment should match the rating. When you get a 4, you can bet that there is something not quite up-to-par, whether you have nice lighting or not. |

I am up to 24 comments right now! I find it interesting how what I have done appeals to about half of the voters (+ comments). The other half dislike the way I chose to crop the photo (saying it adds nothing to the composition). Amazing how 1 "risky" thing, that has nothing to do with the goals of the challenge, can adversely affect your score (right now I'm at 5.8750). |

I am saying that the person, anonymously, vote you a 4 (which would lead you to think any comment made would be less than glowing) But they proceed to make a comment like "Nice Lighting". Sort of, they thought the photo was not their cup of tea..thus they voted a 4 (anonymously) but gave you a semi-fluffy comment that actually doesn't represent anything about their general thoughts on your photo, probably because most people fear for their lives around here when making anything less than glowing, detailed comments. :-/

I really do not see what your point is here.
If someone leaves a comment that says "nice lighting", then the photog can just as easily contact them if they want more information as they could contact someone who leaves a comment saying "4". At least if you say "nice lighting" then you've left some kind of indication of what your thoughts were on the image. If you leave a "4" that just says that you've voted 4, it doesn't say why, and it doesn't automatically say "contact me for an indepth followup" either.

So, would leaving a comment like "contact me for an in-depth follow-up AFTER the voting" make you feel better about knowing my vote?

To be clearer, I don't see these two things as really having any connection. If you want to give people indepth critiques then that's great. However, I'm not really sure that putting your vote on there adds any value to that. |

Adding my vote adds context to the comment.
Look, I am putting my vote in the comment for people who disagree with my vote or simply want to know why I voted that way, good for them or bad. It serves too many purposes here to list without totally jacking the thread.
If a person is so incensed, as you seem to be, then that should encourage them to speak to me AFTER the voting about why I voted this way.
I don't get the sense you want to know that. You seem to be more angry about my vote and that I am not afraid to show it than interest in why I voted yours the way I did. However, I have received many pm's that have done exactly as I entended...they want to know why I voted the way I did and we can talk about phtography together rather than me talking AT them or them talking AT me.

I fear that you misunderstand me. I'm not even in this challenge, and haven't had one of your comments.
I was, however, taking issue with your saying that bad light is a poor comment whilst suggesting that leaving a (4) is a great comment.
If my messages suggest that I'm angry with you, then that is not the intention. |

i see your point...but ya know when i got one as well (a "4" comment that is) i would have rather heard why cause it killed me quite a bit (droped my avg. that is) i was ticked untill i saw your post...then i thought ok its not his "cup of tea" fine he just doesn't care for what i did.....great.
next time tell me that with the 4...cause its not so clear. a 4 just tells me you voted a 4 it doesn't tell me why...and as ugly a reason as it might be i vote you go back and start taking the time to really present your opinion in a way that truly is a comment and not a 4......
i think that any of your "4" comments which i can imagen there are quite a few...should not in fact be counted as comments. cause if a commenters challenge were to come up and all i had did was tell ppl. what i voted them...there would be some mad ppl. at my heals telling me what i did was worce than copy and past........
really not cool dude....really not cool
next time don't tell me and leave you silent opinion speak when i hit the update button.

I never said that leaving a 4 was a great comment. I said leaving a 4 tells you as much about what I think as a fluffy comment. Whether the comment was great or not is debatable. Actually, a number 4 as a comment is closer to the truth of what I think (my actual comment was "Good Lighting" to show the juxtoposition of a low score versus a positive, albeit fluffy, comment) versus a comment like "Good Lighting" which leads you to believe I think more highly of the photo. |
