Woo whooo! I'm at the highest average yet (5.8263) and climbing! It took two days to rise one-tenth of a point, so with three more days to go, I could conceivably break the 6.0 barrier. ;-)

I didn't say that I was qualified; I said that I vote on what I think is a truly great photograph.
No implied qualifications.
My impression is that this is a popular vote, not a seriously judged competition.
I equate this with my automotive experience in the restoration/collector car industry....there are popularly judged shows and seriously judged competitions.
The car that wins the popular contest may not be the most technically correct, but the one that people like best.
The car that wins the competition must establish provenance and have details that make it unique and special......moreso than others and judged by people who know the standard of the industry.

I didn't say that I don't see your point.......for the same reason I'm here, for enjoyment and community as opposed to strictly technical teaching and expertise, I just don't happen to agree.

Actually, I don't really care about winning......what I'd like to see is how my pics fare relative to my taste and my own understanding of what makes good pictures.
I will learn as much, maybe more, from my pics that don't do well, as I'll learn what people don't like.
I will also learn by the results of others' photos that I vote on relative to their final standing.
My methodology is not frivolous or kneejerk......it's just different from yours and reflects my different thinking.
That doesn't necessarily make it wrong, just different.
I also really try to be as positive as I can in life as well.
I grew up believing that if I don't have any positive input for someone, maybe my input isn't necessary at all.
I can live like that.......there's enough negativity out there that I don't need to add to it.
I perfectly understand your point of view.......it's just not the way I do this challenge thing.....I will continue to express my enthusiasm for the people here that really reach me with their photos and take a pass on the ones that don't.
The bottom line is that yes, maybe both the ones that I vote for and the ones that I don't will score higher than the way you'd vote, but methinks the actual ratio between them will be about the same.
So isn't that all that really matters rather than the actual numerical value?
I just grade on a curve! 8>)

Silhouettes are created by backlit subjects, which causes them to appear solid and without much, if any detail. Submit your best silhouette taken this week!
I have gotten some DNMC-type comments that it is NOT a silhouette, just because it is not entirely black.
See challenge details above!
Sure I can add shadows to make it darker, but to me, it is still a silhouette ...

It's really weird.... I'd had at least 25 votes in a row averaging 6.5, coming in in dribs and drabs. This afternoon I had 5 votes spaced fairly evenly every few minutes, two were 5's, two were 4's and one a 3.
Dropped me from 6.29 to 6.25 in just a few minutes.
Were folks grumpy that everyone voting in that small space happened to give low votes? Any others in that range have been interspersed with good ones. Whatever it was, I don't like it :( |

I would guess they are still grumpy, I just got a 1!! and a 2 in the last hour.
Now, myself, I very rarely give a one, I wonder what this person gives to small out of focus cell phone images if I am getting one?!
ANd of course, no comment to go along with the one..

| I think because the Free Study has been up for voting in the mean time, the vote period for Silhouettes seems to have lasted forever. I'm waiting impatiently to see if my "10" photo comes anywhere near the top. |
