Hi guys,

Woke up today and found this strange line through half of my
viewfinder. It remained there after I switched different lenses
and was only there when it was switched ON. Any ideas? don't look
like Dust to me.

Take a picture of something white at the smallest aperture (biggest number) to make sure as much as possible is in focus. Then in Photoshop (or similar) do an auto-levels and auto-contrast.

If you can't see it then, it is likely not in the lens. It can't be on the sensor if you can see it thru the viewfinder (mirror in the way). However, it could be in the viewfinder itself, on the focusing screen or on the mirror.

The bottom of the focusing screen and the mirror are easily checked by removing the lens (without locking up the mirror) and looking around in there.

You need to link to the full URL of the picture.

Something so small on the lens that you can't see it won't show up on your photos. If their is something on your sensor you will see it in the photo and not in the viewfinder. I would say you have something on the ground glass in the viewfinder, maybe a hair. Try to blow it out.

The ground glass Raziel spoke of is the focusing screen. It is the exact distance, albeit a reflected distance, as the sensor. It is ground to give the light something to hit instead of just traveling on thru. It's called a focusing screen because when the image projected on this glass is in focus, the image on the sensor (when the mirror moves out of the way) will also be in focus.

If you take the lens off and look in, you will see a mirror angled slightly up. This is the mirror that reflects the light traveling thru the lens up to the focusing screen. Check the mirror for any stray objects (dirt, hair, etc). Then look above it to see the ground glass (looks kind of cloudy) -- as said, this is the focusing screen. Look this over to see if anything is on it.

If it's not on either of those two places, it could be on the other side of the focusing screen. On the other side there is another mirror that reflects your sight when looking thru the viewfinder, so you can see the focusing screen. It could be either on the viewfinder itself, the mirror or the back of the focusing screen. Unfortunately, I don't believe there is an easy way to get to it if it is. :(

I had some spots show up on my viewfinder even after cleaing the sensor - and the images were also clean. It was on the mirror itself. One good mirror cleaning and the spots are all gone.

I have the exact same line in my D70 viewfinder and like yours it is only visible when the camera is turned on. No idea what it is.

My D70s has it too, it's normal. It's part of the lines in the viewfinder indicating which focus area is being used, I guess these lines have to be electrically powered somehow which is being done through this line. It doesn't show up in the final images in any way.

You're correct! the lines change when I change points of focus.
Thanks!!

It's a part of the LCD that is used to display the focus points. This freaked me out once too, but as you found out it changes based on where your focus is set. The electrical signal needs a path and instead of using really thin wires (which would be REALLY distracting) they extend the Liquid Crystals in a VERY thin, barely noticeable line to the edge where they attach the wires.
