The image quality isn't the only thing to get hung up on(Though I have no doubt it'll be pretty damn good). How much does a 1d weigh? how much noise does it make? The L lenses alone pretty much destroy the whole inconspicuous idea. |

c'mon for that price you would get a Canon mark 1d markII with L glasses |
Yeah, but if you follow THAT reasoning, you can save yourself a BUNDLE by buying a 30D, or even a 5D, right? This camera does what no dSLR can do: it takes a QUIET picture. And it does it in an easily portable size, with no shutter lag (unlike a point 'n shoot) and precision focusing (ditto). Assuming we can take for granted the image quality is up to historical Leica standards, this is a very desirable piece of equipment.

Image quality will depend on the Kodak sensor in that camera...
Rangefinder cameras are ideal for street photography and candids, unobstrusive, discreet...For sports and wildlife, well you need the big telephotos and SLR systems. Different tools for different jobs. |

I'm not really interested in taking a lot street candids, but I do find that even rebel xt gets too much attention. This almost always has a negative effect on your subject even if they've given you permission to shoot them. Also, photography is being restricted more and more in public spaces, so there is a logic to switching to a range finder camera rather than wielding a huge 24-70 2.8 zoom with a big body. There are a lot of people defending the M8, but I wonder if there will be as many willing to put their money where their mouth is. Trust me, I'd buy one tomorrow if I had the extra cash, but am I going to sell all my lenses to buy a leica? Probably not. Part of me wants to, but how practical is it really. No auto focus, prime lenses, smaller selection of lenses etc. Take for example a rebel xti with canon's new fixed 50 1.2. You are getting out of the store at about $2600. If you end of getting a leica system, you probably are going to spend $6000 for the body and one lens. Ouch. Do people really love street photography that much.
I have never seen a cooler looking digital camera, but it seams like the M8 is made for sentimental photographers who have huge bank accounts and want to relive some ascetic photographic fantasy. Too bad I'm not one of those people. Someday maybe :)
p.s. I don't know, maybe I will sell everything and go leica. How cool would that be.

$5000 for the body alone and unless you already have Leica glass it may not be cost effective given a rangefinders limitations. If you want small at a much more affordable price you may want to consider either the new Leica Digilux 3, or Olympus's new E-400, both with 4/3rds mounts and sensor sizes with new pancake sized lenses in a wide range of focal lengths. Of course, image quality is yet to be seen with either of these cameras.
Edit: forgot one thing...Oly's E-400 will only be offered in the European market, so being that you are in the US I guess that won't be a possiblity for you unless you are willing to buy gray market.

Nor do I wish to. It's a tool I'll never need. All the expensive cameras in the world won't make me a great photographer.
After checking out the specs of the M8 it appears that cleaning the sensor should be much easier than DSLRs!!!!!!!!

I don't see any point if M8 only offers a comparable quality pictures. It should offer something remarkable, like it does with M6 on film. Noise, sharpness or such wouldn't make me pay, but sth original. Shutter sound, weight, size blah blah is also funny reasons to pay 5K+lens. Nearly same size as a 350D, almost weights the same. Shutter sound? Doesn't matter for most cases. Lenses? for 8K, I would have the best ones with a cool body. Let's see samples and decide. Until then, M6 will be the dream:) |
