Does it lose light at 1:2 ? That'd be a consideration, it'd be pretty slow if it does.

I looked at this when I was looking for a tele for my D50. After endless hours on the net, I concluded the sigma 70-300 APO DG was slightly better (and cheaper?). Specs are the same, including macro. So I got that one.

Hope that helps.

I have both the APO and non-APO version, get the APO if you can swing it.

If you get the non-APO, you'll have problems with ghosting, flare, and purple fringing in high-contrast situations.

That refers to the macro magnification. a true macro lens will reproduce the subject at 100% (1:1) on the film/sensor.
1:2 mean 1/2 life size on the sensor, and is technically a 'close focus' lens. Some 'macro' lenses are 1:5, so 1:2 is not too bad.

The sigma 70-300 looks pretty good, especially considering the price. It's made pretty cheaply as far as the body goes, though...

The Sigma version of this lens is probably better.

I had the sigma 70-300 APO, the non DG one (2 years old) and it's a great lens. I sold it for $140, and new the DG (new coatings) is only $180.

Check ebay, check the forums here and I bet you can get the Sigma one for a good price.

Someone from pbase has a review of the lens up:

No one really talks about the Di LD version; everyone confuses it with the non-Di LD one. Looks good to me.
