I had a lot of trouble selecting my photo for "Your Corner of the World", partly because I really wanted to enter one of the kangaroo photos I ended up posting as outtakes, but also partly because people I asked really loved the colour version of the one I ended up submitting, but I preferred the black and white one. In the end I just couldn't go against my personal preference, and I'm happy to have gotten my 2nd highest ever score :). However, I'd really like to know what people think of the colour vs. black and white issue now that the challenge is over.

I feel you made the right decision. The color photo doesn't have enough umph in my opinion. The B&W version kept the eeriness of the photo while ridding it of the not-so-vivid color. |

Wow, I think you missed the boat with B & W. I really like the color version a lot more. I like the subdued colors in it as it makes it feel like a warm water-color painting. I got a cold foreboding feeling from the black and white shot. |

Hi Lisae,
I like both the color and black and white versions. I think the black and white version would be more effective if you had cropped tighter. The actual landscape works very well in black and white, but I feel that the sky is all too much the same tonal value. If you have enough pixels in your image, I'd like to see a black and white version with a much tighter crop (the tallest tree would be much closer to the top of the image).

No time right now. 2 cents: I prefer the color version and agree completely with Doug.

Hehe, this is cool. LanSnake, this camera is 1.3 megapixels, so when a photo looks like this without cropping I like to leave it that way :). Anyway, to me there's a kind of symmetry between the clouds and the tufts of grass in the foreground that I like. It's hard to explain, but I don't want to crop any of that out. It may be my physics background, but things that have a kind of fractal nature like that appeal to me.

And now I'll leave it up to you to decide if this image of yours best expressed what you wanted it to either by being B&W or color.
Hope that helps, (not just for today, but for your future decision making as well),

CJ - Yes, I do understand that "rule of thumb" and apply it to nearly every photo I take. I also usually take into account the mood factor, which was a big influence for this photo. The mood of the black and white photo struck me in a more intense way than the colour version, but from talking to people who didn't know this place, they didn't seem to feel the same way about it. I realised it was probably something to do with the familiarity of this landscape to me, because I go to this little island a lot. My entry for the "Black and White" challenge was shot on the edge of this island.
I decided that the important thing to me was not which one I thought was "better", but which one I most wanted people's votes and comments on, which one I wanted on my profile here, etc. and the black and white photo seemed more interesting to me in that respect. However, I decided that I would definitely post the colour version after the challenge was over and see what responses it would get.

I definitely think you chose the right one. |

I like the color version better, myself. The black and white gives me an ominous, waiting feeling - like some creature is going to rise up and break the stillness of that water..lol. The color has more a sense of tranquility and warmth to my eye. Both effective, but different. :-) |

While I gave the black&white one a good score, I prefer the color one . The one in color gives me a calm and serene feeling about the place. In color, I would come here to relax and contemplate. I don't get the same feeling in b/w. |

I think I'd prefer the B+W even more if there was more detail/tonal variation in the clouds; maybe DPC-illegal edits would help. I agree the color version has a watercolor painting feel to it; you might consider running it through a filter to make it look even more so... |

If you want a more accurate reaction you might prepare a smaller composite image of the two side by side; maybe floated on a gray or black background. It's hard to really vote" for sure when flipping back and forth... |

And you haven't even (that I know) tried my favorite alternative -- colorizing or duotones. Try adding a touch of dark blue to get a similar effect to toning a print with (I think) selenium to get what I suspect would be a cold, wintery look; almost completely the opposite of the original (color) look. |
