I'm sorry if this has already been asked but is silence a sound? I understand that the definition of silence might be the absence of sound but...ask anyone with young children and they will tell that silence indeed has a sound. I went out tonight at four in the morning and took some shots of the usually busy street in front of my apartment. Of course now it's empty, and even without cars racing by, even in that silence there was that odd feel. Am I the only one who knows what I'm trying to communicate? Maybe I'm just lost...heh.

Complete silence is a very unusual state - rarer even than complete darkness. Quietness, however, is more common. My guess would be people will not vote so highly for pictures representing quietness as they will for more specifically noisy pictures.

I think that silence can be appreciated and may well be said to have a kind of "soundful" quality by being a simple absence of sound... However, this challenge is about making pictures that make the viewer instantly think of the sound attached to the image, as far as I can tell. If you show an image of a serene scene here people will think of calm and suchlike but not so much of the sound (or lack thereof) that accompanies. I think it would be very difficult to pull off a "silent" shot in this challenge. Seems to me you need to look at your picture and think of things people would associate with it - a twanging guitar string, or an old fashioned alarm clock with the bells on that is clearly ringing in the shot - these are things where the sound can't really be separated from thoughts about the image, whereas a quiet street at night doesn't have that same quality.

Just my view and musings - hopefully of use, though.
