Slow and steady with leaving the comments, but I like to include detail:-)
Sigh, so much for hoping to get this into my top 5 slots.

And your comments are always so detailed and constructive! Looking forward to mine. Which is in the range of your score right now...

tjbel05, in scoring, I'm looking for a little care in setup, but not for studio settings--some voters seem to think portraits belong away from nature, which seems silly in a pet-oriented challenge. Entries which are well exposed, with some attention to composition, nice clean backgrounds and most importantly an emotional connection get higher scores. Voting slowly in order to make constructive comments.

Put the bag on if it is bothering you. That at least gives you some delay between dropping the comment and getting flamed for doing so.

I have commented on 30 or so of my higher voted images and I have started commenting on some of my lower ones. Hopefully no one takes offense to my lowly opinions. If anyone is interested I would gladly comment on some after the challenge is over if you didnt get any/many. Just let me know if you are interested.

And this is what would be most appreciated. I am not complaining, as any comment is better than no comment. But looking for more detail on why the voter(not you) thought it just looked like a snapshot is all.

So do you vote lower for studio shots and higher for "natural" shots. There are a bunch of studio shots in the challenge.. not as many as the "natural" ones, but still a bunch.

I was under the impression (mistakenly it seems) that people wanted understanding of why people were rating a certain way on their entries. I have been trying to comment even when I have a negative or constructive comment or thought about a photo, but several comments in this thread seem to point to a few comments I made as being off base or harsh. My opinions are mine, but I was simply trying to provide the feedback people were asking for.

I second that ... I think that people are very sensitive to this challenge/voting because this is their pet ... with whom they have a very emotional attachment ... I've been contacted via PM several times regarding my comments ... if no one is commenting and people are receiving a lower than expected score then the forum would be filled with the "no comment" whining ... apparently I need to either quit commenting at all or put the bag on my head ...

Absolutely NOT, I vote based on clarity, composition, focus, and emotional reaction to the photo. There a a whole bunch of amazingly beautiful pet photos in this challenge, indoor and outdoor.

You shouldn't stop giving comments. They'll actually have an idea of where the photo goes wrong instead of getting a comment log full of "great photo!" and "cute animal!" only to wind up with a 4.xxxx and no explanation as to why. It is a personal subject for most of us, but everyone will get over it.

agree ... there are quite a few great photos that took the time to pay attention to the composition and detail (not cut off 1/2 of the pets face/ears) ... not have a completely cluttered BG ... those shots got the highest scores from me ... you can absolutely tell which photographers took this seriously and which just took a quick photo of their pet to submit ...

I agree completely. Its the details that make the comments constructive. I want them good or bad, but I would like details to help me improve my ability, thats all I was trying to say. I would also never dream of sending a pm about a comment during a challenge, I appreciate all comments made.

:) There are a ton of great shots this challenge. Some indoor some outdoor. I also look for the same things you do.

As for people getting upset with comments.... don't take it personal. It's not an attack on your pet. We are not rating how beautiful your pet is. This is solely based on your photography skills. I don't take it to heart if someone tells me something negative about my pet photo.. I know it's my picture they are commenting on. :)

Nice score there. And to show it so early in the challenge. Well done!

NSOROMA----Thanks for your comment, what you critique on is something I did on purpose, with 12 comments and 50% of them have stated the same. Makes it kinda cool. Its hard to please everyone.....Thanks again....ace

Wish I had seen this site BEFORE I submitted:

//www.seniorandshopmaker.com/wegman.htm

Anne Geddes photographs babies. Ansel Adams shoot mountains. William Wegman apparently is the go-to guy for puppies. :)

On the commenting thing: I received 6 in my 1st 69 votes, now only 1 in the next 69. Are voters worried about voter backlash? This is a challenge site, and part of submitting photos is knowing that you will get comments, both positive and negative. If you can't handle a constructive comment, then IMO you shouldn't be submitting here. I'm not talking about insulting or rude comments, but the type where the voter tries to tell you what they like/dislike, technical flaws, etc.

Keep those comments coming!

Edit: Off to vote and comment more myself!

Agreed it is the constructive comments that tell the good & the bad that will help the fellow photographer grow or at least offer insight into the mind of the viewer.

Let me state that while a score is a score it still would be nice to know why the entry lately has recieved some low votes when all the other comments paint it in a good light.

*Scratches head*Tell me what flaws do you see or what is your like or dislike and why. I may or may not always agree with a constructive comment or comment but I DO appreciate them because they tell me how a composition is recieved and offer insight into viewer reactions/feelings to a piece.

Oh and Lynnesite thank you for the compliment:-) I shall see what I can do on the limited time I do have. The coming Holidays and cleaning are getting me stressed:-) Hopefully I will stumble upon yours soon.

Okay I have said my piece now back to commenting and voting!

I totally agree!!! I just finished voting and now I'm going back to comment. Only 2 10's one cat and one dog. Several 9's, tons of 8's and 7's, but also lots of 4's and even some threes. If it just meets the challenge but isn't artful, or well composed, or focused, etc, but "ok," you get a 4. If it's blurred and to my eye- awful, sorry, but some 3's were given out.

The more I look at my own entry, the less I like it. It doesn't look as good on the DPC page as it did on the Photoshop page. Oh well. 5.7 is ok and I figure that's about the range where it will stay. I've gotten 3 nice comments. ;~D

Ok, off to make more remarks. (blah blah blah blah blah)

I want any and all comments ... I've only received 4 so far ... doesn't matter to me if they're good or bad ... I just want feedback on what the voter sees/thinks ... my score has been sliding downward all day ... with no comments ... from 5.81 last night to 5.63 this afternoon ... oh well ...

"Don't count your chickens before they hatch"
there are LOADS of ribbon candidates out there, and still 5 days to go.
but yes, anything is possible, so let us hope and pray...;)

look at the highest scoring portraits here i.e. Portraits in Landscape
they crop to the face/eyes
you are limiting yourself if you only take the full subject

15 wonderful comments! I love getting comments. Some just say they like it, some offer advice/suggestions, some tell me what bothered them (closed eyes that really are not closed at all - but that would not be readily apparent to the average viewer)
My score was at a 7 for a bit and has dropped back down. Oh well. I took my best shot.

You are so right, I gave 7- 10's out in this challenge that's alot, but front page or not so far is my highest score and I am happy for that.
