'lossy' is not the name of a format, but a generic modifying term for any format that compresses files, resulting in 'loss' of information.
I think - :)

On the web, to check an image size, open an image and right click on it. This will bring up a drop down list and under properties, you can see what the pixel dimensions are.
There are voters that deduct points for an image not sized at 640 on at least one side (or 720 depending on the challenge).

Elements 5 has curves, but, as I understand, it is not quite as flexible as the curves in the "real" photoshop.
Photoshop can also do a few more things with layers, and has things like the history brush tool, and some other things that Elements doesn't have.
But it's a lot more expensive. Maybe one day.. |

I still have PSP9 and I like it, but it's hard to share information with other people because so few people have it. I've been thinking about getting elements but I'm not really sure which way to go. |
If you are already using a version of Photoshop, I would not switch to Elements. This is like a software and skill downgrade. If you need to share files with other people save the photo as a .TIFF or .JPEG.
Photoshop Elements is a good program for beginners but if you're serious about digital photography Photoshop is a must.

Deb, where/how do you see the history in a jpeg file? I always thought I had to save a PSD file to save the history. |

What I meant by sharing information is the sharing of ideas about how to perform certain tasks. Most people discuss photshop ideas. You'll never see any "Tips and Tricks" articles about PSP. I very rarely see anything about PSP. The problem is that I can't afford $600 - $700 for CS2. I bought PSP9 for $99.00.

As long as you're happy with basic editing Photoshop Elements works fine. This is what I started with. Again this software is fine for beginners.
What you have to be aware of - if someone is discussing advanced photoshop techniques - these may not be available in Photoshop Elements.

In Preferences, you can set the History to save the file to metadata. Then whenever you save as a jpeg, it'll show that history when you select (but don't open) that file in Adobe Bridge. It's in the metadata tab on the left that also has the exif info and stuff. I don't know if that makes sense or not, but that's how I do it.
And my secret goal, oddly enough, has just been met. :-) He didn't particularly like the picture, but I got my comment. Does this mean I have to set new goals now? |

Nah, I think I'll keep it as a goal just the same. Now I'll just up it to two comments. :-)

i have no goals, really. i'm aimless. stumbling through life, things just seem to happen to me, and usually for the best.
no, wait, i have one goal. how do i get the oobie gif to put on my bio? i was deeply flattered to get one, and a lifetime-up-'til-this-point one at that, so i'd love to display it on my profile.
oo, yeah, happy new year everyone!
one other question - any thoughts on elliptical vs. rowers for exercise machines?

I have modified the preferences, so next time I use PS I see if I did it right. Thank you for the info. |

Shhhhhh, I just wanted to share, but after my brag about my 5.7 on Harsh Environments my score slipped a Tenth point. And I don’t want that to happen to my current Fireworks entry, after 84 votes a score of 6.6 and the most comments I have received on any photo in a challenge so far, and it’s been less than 24 hours. I guess I don’t completely suck, ooops. J

congrats on the 6.6. i've only broken 6 by a small margin but it felt awesome to finally do it.

Juli, 3 really, although my pattern, and environment have done a small flip-flop both are around a 5.6, so with fireworks, 3. “knock on wood”.

Well, I won't be in Fences or Centered. I procrastinated until today and then ended up without a car. Couldn't find anything interesting in the house to shot. So... hopefully I won't procrastinate on the Procrastinate challenge. LOL.

I'm in Centered Composition but I may be too off-centered for most voters.
